Pennant Pledges his future to Birmingham
Or is it a come and get me plea?

Birmingham City midfielder Jermaine Pennant has pledged his future to the Blues– even if they lose their battle to remain in the top flight.

Pennant, who was linked with Liverpool during the January transfer window, insisted he ‘won’t be jumping ship’ if the club suffers relegation at season’s end.

Pennant, who joined Birmingham in January 2005 on loan from Arsenal before signing a three-year deal in April 2005, has been Birmingham’s most consistent performer this season, but he has had a number of problems off the field, including a February 2005 court appearance for drink driving. Pennant being forced to play two games for the blues, sporting an electronic tag.

Birmingham, who paid £3 million to make Pennant’s loan permanent, are currently three points adrift of fourth from bottom West Bromwich Albion after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Bryan Robson's side at St. Andrews.

"You won't be seeing me slapping in a transfer request if we go down,’ the 23-year-old Pennant said. ‘If another club comes in for me, and Birmingham make the decision to sell me, then that's up to them.

Birmingham should they go down will look to trim their squad, that seems certain. So is Pennant saying that he really wants to stay at the blues, or ‘I’m available at the right price?’ should the blues go down? Cynical, maybe…. Unlikely I’m not so sure.

"But as for me, I want to stay here. The club and [coach] Steve Bruce have shown a great deal of faith in me and I want to repay that."

I hope that Pennant is on the level, the club has stuck by him, when for all the world his career looked in tatters.
