Wessex League Round Up
Winchester City one point from title
Winchester City practically wrapped up the Wessex League title, with an impressive 4-1 win over high-flying Gosport Borough at the Denplan City Ground.
Steve Tate’s troops now theoretically need just one more point to win the league for a second time in three seasons, given their far superior goal difference over second placed Thatcham Town.
It wasn’t the best of starts however against Alex Pike’s Gosport, with the visitors taking the lead after just ten minutes, through Kevin Gill.
Ian Mancey levelled just three minutes later though for Winchester, before Mancey found the net again prior to half time to give Tate’s outfit the lead.
Liam Green then made it 3-1 after the break with a crisply struck left foot effort.
Green was on target for a second time to make it 4-1 when he scored from the penalty spot after Adam Camfield had brought down Christer Warren inside the area.
An impressive crowd of 343 turned up for the match and, no doubt the travelling Winchester City faithful will be making a relatively short trip to VT FC next Saturday in large numbers for what could be their crowing day.
It’s been an excellent run in the last ten games for Winchester, winning nine and drawing just one, whereas second placed Thatcham Town have dropped seven points during the same period.
The Berkshire outfit took three points comfortably this weekend though, winning 4-0 at basement club Portland United.
Four different scorers in Mark and Jamie Green, Paul Taplin and Sean Cook did the trick for Jason Braidwood’s side.
Thatcham need just two more points from their final three games to secure second spot in the table.
Although they have taken Winchester City almost to the wire, the title now it seems is beyond them.
As a result of Gosport’s defeat at Winchester City, AFC Totton move up into third spot in the table, following a 3-0 win over Christchurch at Testwood Park.
Mike Gosney grabbed two of Totton’s goals, with Floyd Hamodu snatching the other one.
Andover surprisingly slipped up, going down 3-0 away to a Cowes Sports outfit that have hardly lit up the Wessex League.
Missing super striker Justin Bennett, out with twisted knee ligaments, the Lions tumbled to goals from Matt Bowler, Darren Powell and Simon Williams.
The Isle of Wight side had previously won just one game in their last ten outings.
In contrast Poole Town had lost just twice prior to the weekend in their previous ten games and, they kept their recent good form going, beating AFC Newbury 3-1 at Tatnam.
Newbury took the lead via an own goal before Carl Chivers equalised for Tommy Killick’s side.
Leigh Phillips then tucked away a second for the Dolphins and Stuart Brown sealed the points with a third.
If you were to believe the Bournemouth Daily Echo on Saturday, hopefully you didn’t make the pointless trip to AFC Newbury for what the Echo would have you believe was Newbury versus Christchurch.
In tandem with the Pink on Saturday, for the third time they insist on printing a picture of what the Pink believe is Winchester City manager Steve Tate.
As anyone who follows the Wessex League will know, the photo is actually assistant manager Keith Williams.
Maybe, just maybe they might get it right one day.
Back to the round up and Hamworthy United suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to VT FC.
Mike Spinney and Dean Byrne scored VT’s goals.
Alton Town’s recent resurgence continued with an excellent 3-1 win for them over wobbling Wimborne Town.
Alton are now just three points adrift of fourth-from-bottom Newbury, with three games to play.
Newbury do have a game in hand though.
As for the Magpies, they have now gone seven games without a win.
Mark Lilley was the hero for Alton, grabbing a hat-trick for his side, with Sam Percival replying for Wimborne.
Wimborne Town’s lowest ever finish in the Wessex League was eighth in the 2001/02 season.
They now stand in an unfamiliar twelfth spot with just four games to play.
The highest they can possibly finish now is eighth.
Bournemouth Poppies season is stuttering to an end, having been held at home by Lymington Town 1-1.
Poppies took the lead after just ten minutes with a goal from Lamin Dibba but, ten minutes from time the visitors equalised through Sean Cummings.
Finally Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Moneyfields also drew 1-1 at Western Way.
Jason Clements put Moneys in front but the hosts levelled through Graham Mankin.
