Scolari scared off by the press, Whats he got to hide?
Mc Claren affair only increases his appeal to the FA
The Sun newspaper revealed on Saturday that McClaren had an affair with a secretary during a trial separation from his wife.
The 44-year-old said: "It happened a while ago while my wife and I were not together, and it's in the past."
Luiz Felipe Scolari turned down the job on Friday - citing media intrusion.
Scolari's decision means McClaren could now be back in the running for the role of managing the national side.
McClaren said: "I feel this is a private matter, but in view of speculation about the England job, I felt I had to clarify the situation.
"I don't know why this has come out at this time but I want to clear it up.
"I was separated from my wife a year ago and had a three-month affair. It ended at the end of August last year and I went back to my wife in September."
Scolari had earlier said he was unwilling to deal with the pressure of seeing a pack of journalists camped outside his house. But surely Scolari knew already that the press would ride him should he accept the job, maybe it hasd more to do with cash, and his wife.
He said he was particularly upset by newspaper comparisons between his wife, Olga, and current boss Sven-Goran Eriksson's partner, Nancy Dell'Olio.
