Terry for England
El Tel has turned down the chance to manage Middlesbrough due to the demands of managing in the Premiership.

He told the News of the World: "It had not entered my mind to work full-time again, but chairman Steve Gibson was very persuasive.

"At 63 I couldn't have committed to full-time management the way I would five or 10 years ago.

"I think I have had my years as a full-time manager now."

Boro are looking to replace Steve McClaren, who will succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson as England coach after the World Cup finals.

And Venables added: "If it had been any other club bar Boro, I'd have made up my mind sooner."

Venables was first drafted in by Gibson in December 2000 as Bryan Robson's side plunged towards the relegation zone.

The pair managed to preserve Boro's Premiership status and Venables was offered a coaching post on a permanent basis, but turned it down to concentrate on his business and television commitments.

Venables' last stint in football was an eight-month spell in charge at Leeds which he quit in March 2003.

"I had a great time there before and have a lot of happy memories of the area, the club and the fans."

McClaren is thought to be keen to use Venables as an advisor when he becomes England head coach after the World Cup.
