Reasons to be cheerful...
Chin up Blades!

Well, we’re a few days away from the kick off of the Premiership and some of the campers aren’t happy. Already Unitedites are bemoaning the lack of “creative” signings, flustered that their season tickets didn’t come through the door as soon as the final whistle blew in April and are complaining about a starting XI that hasn’t even been started yet.

But as ever in our little corner of the internet, we like to look on the bright side of life. Forget that the bookies have us down as second favourites to be relegated. Cast aside in your minds the phenomenal amounts of money Chelsea have spent again this close season. Guffaw at the Liverpool fans claiming finishing anywhere below fourth isn’t good enough. Instead, sit back and let the following list try and put than inane grin back on your face.

* We ARE Premier League! Just say it. Doesn’t it create a warm fuzzy feeling somewhere between your throat and your beet gut? It’s been twelve long years since the Blades were in the top-flight with some near misses along the way. It’s taken a very long time for us to get back into England’s elite so a little perspective should tell you to enjoy it while you can.

* A chairman who knows what he’s doing. Kevin McCabe is working wonders for Sheffield United, allowing growth both on and off the pitch. We have long lived in the optimistic hope that a future would exist at the club where selling off our best players on the cheap ceased to be seen as a way of survival. This utopia began to be realised when Wigan expressed a £4 million interest in Phil Jagielka last October, only to be promptly told where to shove it. Previous administrations would have taken the money. We can also spend some money, the transfer fee paid record having been broken twice this year.
The off-field developments are even more startling. Football is now a business that cannot rely on football alone and it seems United have realised this. Property investments, Gyms, Chinese Clubs, Hotels, Bars… the club has it’s fingers in many pies all of which can reap worthwhile rewards.

* Managerial stability. Love or loath the man who is currently in the hot-seat, you can’t deny that Sheffield United have benefited from having the same person in the job for the last seven years. Prior to Neil Warnock’s appointment, Sheffield United had been through five managers since Dave Bassett’s departure in 1995. We now have someone who knows the place inside out and has built his own team… whether you agree with that or not, last season goes to show what can be done.

* Crowds on the up. Season ticket sales have surpassed all previous records down at Bramall Lane with over 20,000 people putting their money into the club before a ball has been kicked in our Premiership season. Not bad for a club who play unattractive football eh?

*And finally… our beautiful old Bramall Lane doesn’t look so shabby anymore. A lick of paint here, a new corner stand there, a refit in the superstore and a ground ready for Premiership football. We look the part, let’s hope we can act it too.

See, things aren’t really so bad after all are they? And if all the above has failed to lift your spirits, take solace in this… at least football’s back and you don’t have to watch cricket anymore!

See you on Saturday and Up the Blades!

A little about me...
... well I'm a Blade from a family of Blades but I've mainly got my Nannan and my Uncle to thank for my alligience. I've been a season ticket holder at Bramall Lane for the last 8 years and run an unofficial Blades site with my Unitedite partner to share our experiences with other Blades.
