Praise for BeckhamMonday 15 Jan 2007
Praise for Beckham
Good luck to Becks and thanks for what he did for England

So David Beckham won’t be gracing the Premiership again after all.

He’s turned his back on a move back to Blighty and instead he’s off to the good ole U S of A and the barmy climate of Los Angeles.

And let’s face it, who can blame him.

I’ve heard so many rubbish comments lately about Beckham since the news broke out, it’s prompted me to write this little piece.

Comments such as “he was never any good” and “Beckham, oh that thick twat.”

Yes, of course he’s thick! He’s gone to the pinnacle of his profession. He’s captained his country in World Cup Finals. He’s played for - and I hate to say it - two of the biggest clubs in the world. Real Madrid are ok in my book – it’s the other lot I’m not so keen on. He’s earnt a massive fortune out of it all. And now he’s going to spend the twilight of his career lapping the sun up and mixing with Hollywood superstars. Yep, he really is thick isn’t he!

And “he was never any good”????? What a load of garbage.

He was and probably still is the best crosser of the ball in the world. And his ratio from free kicks was absolutely unbelievable. At set pieces he always stood a good chance of finding the back of the net.

Ok, he wasn’t the quickest player on the planet, nor was he the greatest header of the ball but every player has their plus points and their not so good points. When do you see Ronaldinho or Henry heading goals? Very occasionally, yet they’re both revered as two of the best players in the world and rightly so.

It’s a shame Beckham didn’t actually win anything during his time in Spain because particularly his first two seasons at the Bernabau, he was different class and was probably their best player, despite having the likes of Zinidine Zidane, Figo and Roberto Carlos in the side.

People have criticised his lifestyle outside the game but at least he’s never in the news for the wrong reasons, for example like Paul Gascoigne, Stan Collymore or Tony Adams. Oh, apart from that fling with some ‘celebrity’ (Purely because of the scandal) named Rebecca somebodyorother that has since fallen back into her own misguided little world.

A family man from a modest background that just happened to be a brilliant footballer come good. What’s wrong with that? Good luck to him and thanks for your time in an England shirt (especially the Greek game to get us to the World Cup in 2002 – awesome!) – and given his background as a man u player, coming from a Leeds fan, that’s praise of the highest order!

Not good enough to be in the top 22 players for our country anymore? Mr McClaren – wake up and smell the coffee.

Comments : He's had his ups and downs but he's always been a loyal servant to England and always given 110% to his teams. You have to wonder though, why the end is always so bitter? It's a shame that Fabio Capello will not let Beckham play anymore. He says that Beckham's mind will be elsewhere, but I doubt it would be anywhere else than on his continued high levels of fitness and the next match. Only time will tell...
