Smith suffers nasty injury
Manchester United midfielder Alan Smith is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle in the 1-0 FA Cup loss to Liverpool.

Smith had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes suffered the injury when fell awkwardly when blocking a shot by John Arne Riise and had to receive oxygen as he was stretchered from the field.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the club's worst fears when saying the player has broken his leg and admits it is "one of the worst" injuries he has ever witnessed.

The player is now facing a lengthy lay-off, but Ferguson is backing him to bounce back.

"He has broken his leg and dislocated the ankle joint," the United boss told MUTV.

"It is a bad one. He has gone to hospital, it looks very long-term, it is one of the worst I have seen.

"I wasn't aware of what had happened because I was following the path of the ball, but you saw the reaction of the players round about Alan and you knew it was a bad one."
