Stadium Fiasco Proves Costly For The Seagulls

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Mark McGhee has outlined his concerns about the club’s future, and revealed the extent to which the Seagulls’ long-running campaign for a new stadium is halting his team’s on-pitch progress.
Without the finances to strengthen his squad significantly during the January transfer window, McGhee has now embarked on a frustrating search for a loan signing to replace departed striker Leon Knight.
“I’ve spoken to hundreds of managers and agents but it is proving difficult to find a striker with the required ability to make a difference at this level,” he said.
Since taking over from Steve Coppell in October 2003, McGhee has recouped almost £3million in the transfer market, mainly on the sales of Knight who joined Swansea in January, Darren Currie (Ipswich) and youth products Dan Harding (Leeds) and Adam Virgo (Celtic). The majority of this money, insists McGhee, has been spent on legal costs in defending the club’s application for a purpose-built 22,000-seater development at Falmer, on the outskirts of the city.
Speaking on the eve of Albion’s 1-0 defeat to Watford at The Withdean Stadium last Saturday – a sixth consecutive winless encounter that leaves them second-bottom and five points from safety in The Championship – McGhee also expressed his long-term concerns.
“The club is struggling because we cannot invest in personnel at this stage. If we do not get a stadium within the next couple of years, an opportunity for investment won’t come and I can see us slipping into League One, League Two and within five years maybe even worse,” he said.
McGhee also confirmed the departures of Michel Kuipers and Mark McCammon, on loan to Boston United and Bristol City respectively and praised his new goalkeeper Wayne Henderson, whose recent performances have earned him a maiden call-up to the Republic of Ireland full squad.

Comments : It's a rubbish situation down at Brighton. They have an excellent plan for a new stadium, they thought they had the go-ahead from John Prescott and then the local council (Hove?) stepped in to mess things up. The council are failing in their civic duty - wasting tax payers money fighting a legal battle, and rejecting the opportunity of more jobs and an improved local infrastructure. It's shameful.
