Souness lives to fight another day with a home win!

Arsenal totally dominated the first half, but in the second Newcastle's physical approach overwhelmed the Gunners and they conceeded a late goal.

Despite the return of Michael Owen, Newcastle were on the back foot from the start. On 14 minutes Arsenal appealed for a penalty after a strike from Gilberto hit the arm of Titus Bramble but was adjudged accidental by the ref.

Two chances followed for Thierry Henry, the first of which produced a stunning save from Shay Given, and the second which he failed to control.

After the break, Newcastle were transformed with two shots from Parker and Shearer going wide of the mark. The Gunners were rattled and after 56 minutes Gilberto was booked again for a tackle on Jean-Alain Boumsong, and he headed off for an early bath.

Scot Parker nearly scored with a long range shot, but was taken off shortly afterwards following a collision with Jens Lehmann.

Shearer was having a physical game, and it was his forceful presence that set up the only goal as he laid off the ball for Nolberto Solano to fire off a shot past Lehmann.

Newcastle move up a place, but I still have the feeling that every match could be Souness' last.
