Manchester United 4 Wigan 0
Man Utd turn on the style to defy their critics.

Just exactly who are these critics? Five Premiership wins in six matches, second in the league, and closing the gap on Chelsea - at any other club Sir Alex would be a hero. But this isn't any other club. It's Manchester United, and the fans expect nothing but the best. Well last night they got just that.

In the opening minutes of the match Man Utd gave the fans several clues to the end result.

Paul Scholes' volleyed shot went just wide of the post. Darren Fletcher's header went straight into the hands of Wigan keeper, Mike Pollitt.

Wayne Rooney's shot was pushed away, just! Ruud van Nistelrooy met a ball from Rooney, but his volley was saved aswell.

Pollitt kept Wigan in the match, but on 30 minutes a Ryan Giggs corner was met by Rio Ferdinand and headed into the net, to give him his first goal for Manchester United.

Another shot from Rooney was saved, but the youngster was determined to get his name on the scoresheet, and on 35 minutes he did. A solo effort that looked as though it had all gone wrong, Rooney took the ball into the area, was tackled, lost the ball, got it back again, and, using his wrong foot, sweetly struck the ball past Pollitt.

After the break it was more of the same. After 50 minutes Rooney hit the crossbar from 2 yards. On 55 minutes Rooney was in the action again as he picked up a pass from Van Nistelrooy and chipped the ball in for Man Utd's third.

To round it up, Van Nistelrooy was brought down in the area and stepped up to score the fourth.

After the match Sir Alex said: "In the context of the last seven days, this victory could not have come at a better time. Now, we have another job to do at Aston Villa on Saturday."
