Wigan (2) 2 Bolton (0) 0
I’m a Wigan sceptic no more….

If you had asked me how Wigan would fair at the start of the season, I like many expected them to be Premier whipping boys this season. How wrong was I? Not only do they look to have secured their place in the English top flight for another season, who now would rule out a final appearance as well?.

Jason Roberts, who seemed to be more Donkey than preditor in his last season in the top flight, made the decisive strikes in quick succession towards the end of the first half to all but seal the tie for the home side.

Roberts scored his first five minutes before the interval, after good approach work by Andreas Johansson. Roberts hammering a low shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen. He had to thank unluck Jaidi for his second, in first half injury time as the Tunisian International scuffed a clearance, slipped and allowed Roberts to power through and smash the ball past Jaaskelainen. Big Sam must have used some interesting words at half time.

That made the half-time scoreline an inaccurate reflection of the action, Wigan's only other threat coming when Graham Kavanagh failed to hit the target after a loose ball fell at his feet following a heavy challenge on Lee McCulloch.

Bolton at that stage had seen a Abdoulaye Faye shot cleared off the line by Ryan Taylor, a Kevin Nolan cross evade the unmarked Stelios by inches near the penalty spot and a Gary Speed shot from close range go straight into the arms of goalkeeper Mike Pollitt. Can’t football be cruel!

The second half reflected the first with Bolton having numerous chances to open their account, a Hidetoshi Nakata free-kick saw Stelios have a chance, Ricardo Vaz Te sent a header just wide, and latter brought a fantastic save from Pollitt, from close range. Does anyone else think that Pollits physic resembles a pub team Keepers? The resemblance ends there, he was superb on the night.
Bolton were having clearly the better of things but Wigan should have extended their advantage when one of their substitutes, Henri Camara, was put clean through the opposing defence. His shot from inside the penalty area struck the legs of the advancing Jaaskelainen. The game ended and Wigan progress.

It would be interesting to assess how much of Wigan’s success is down to Paul Jewell. He has earn’t his reputation as a first class manager, maybe now he should be linked with moves to better clubs, how about Paul Jewell for Man United or Paul Jewell England manager?

Comments : I told you they were more than a flash in the pan. It's not now just a case of staying up - they have a real chance of getting into Europe.
