The Gunners have more Jam than Tesco’s, as big hearted Doncaster were seconds away from the semi’s……

Arsenal well and truly rode their luck, when with seconds to go in extra time injury time Gilberto Silva equalized to force a penalty shoot out …… no one went to bed early, this was must watch TV.

Most neutral observers could see that Doncatser had dominated much of the game, run their legs off and deserved more than the reported £300,000 gained from television rights. They deserved and earn’t the right to a two legged semi final against Blackburn.

Doncaster took the lead early, against a very different side to the one that faced Chelsea on Sunday. Some might call it an Arsenal B team, which indicates the level of respect Wenger has for either the competition or the opposition.

On 4 minutes in, a Doncaster flick gave McIndoe the chance to run at the Arsenal defense, Manuel Almunia came out to narrow the angle. But the Doncaster striker kept his cool flicking the ball under the Arsenal keeper, ball creeping over the line off a post. 1-0 to Doncaster and the first goal Doncaster had scored against Arsenal since 1922

Soon afterwards Robin van Persie, limped out of the action following a crunching challenge from Stephen Roberts.

Doncaster should have increased that advantage either side of half-time, exposing an Arsenal back four that never looked like the Premiership ticket.

Thornton brought a good save from Almunia with his shot from the just outside the box.

Then Heffernan was clean through and Almunia managed to beat his shot away and then block Lewis Guy's rebound effort.

On 63 minutes Owusu-Abeyie managed to create space just outside the area and Budtz was left stranded as his shot clipped Thornton's foot and spun into the net. A cruel deflection against the run of play 1-1, and so to extra time….

Doncaster scored first in extra time, taking the lead for the second time in the match through Green after a real howler from Swiss defender Senderos. He looked to clear McIndoe's cross but he took to long, allowing Green to toe poke the ball home. 2-1 to Doncaster.

With seemingly seconds remaining Gilberto managed to get on the end of Emmanuel Eboue's cross to inflict penalties on a heart broken Doncaster.

Doncaster may have beaten Manchester City on penalties but unfortunately they were unable to replicate that.

Neil Roberts hit the post and Almunia saved shots from Heffernan and Green.

Budtz did save from Hleb but it was all over and Doncaster had lost even though they had not been behind in the whole game.

Doncaster must now concentrate on the league, they are currently 8th in League one and a play off place will be theirs if they display more of this determination, direct play and fighting spirit. As for the Gunners, well Wenger said after the game

"The team is back on track and the team is ready to do well again."

We will see Mr. Wenger, last night the wheels almost fell of the Arsenal bus…… You Jammy Jammy Jammy Gooners.

Comments : Did you draw that picture - better than usual! Regardless of the competition, with the Arse doing so badly in the Premiership you would think that Wenger would be glad of any silverware this season and play his strongest team regardless. Maybe he should have play his B-team in the Premiership!!
