Leeds United 3-1 Coventry
United dig deep and go on to mince Coventry to gain three precious points.
The first 10 minutes saw Coventry posing a big threat, they hit the bar after a well crafted move down the left flank. But after that the 24,000 in the crowd saw Leeds pile on the pressure with a few narrow misses. Leeds finally put themselves one nil up with a powerful volley on 31 minutes, from Jonathon Douglas. Coventry were determined not to go in at half time 1-0 down. Two cracking long range efforts from Gary McSheffrey and Andy Morrell, were just kept out.
Both sides had missed opportunities as they went in at half time but it was to be Coventry who would rue them.
Coventry were raring to go at the start of the second half and Duffy managed to beat the goalkeeper only to find the post. Coventry had been trying long ranged shots all match but on the 58th minute no one had expected Don Hutchison to attempt a forty-yard volley, he did, and the ball sailed over Neil Sullivans head to make it one all. Two minutes later on the hour mark, the Sky Blues fans barely had time to celebrate as Robbie Blake thundered a shot from 10 yards out into the roof of the net to give Leeds the upper hand once again. Creswell put Leeds two up, after scoring his first ever goal at Elland Road for the Mighty Whites. Leeds did give Coventry one last ditch hope to get back into the match when Butler pulled down Doyle in the penalty area. McSheffery composed himself only to hit the bar. Leeds had to dig deep and defend well but it was worth it as they gave the crowd a belated Christmas present.
Boxing Day also marked the highest attendance Leeds have received all season 24,291.
