Wigan 0-1 WBA
Who would have predicted an away win for the Baggies??
Ten-man West Brom earned a crucial three points against Wigan after Martin Albrechtsen's second-half strike earned them a 1-0 win at The JJB Stadium.
Albion had the better of a sterile first half with Kevin Campbell stealing in between Stephane Henchoz and Mike Pollitt after a knock-down from Darren Moore, with his flick shot deflected over the bar by the advancing goalkeeper.
But Moore was sent off for the visitors just before the break for deliberately shoulder-barging Jason Roberts - his second bookable offence.
A fuming Bryan Robson made an immediate change to the delight of the Wigan fans as former Latic Nathan Ellington was replaced by Albrechtsen, who stepped in to cover for Moore's departure.
And it was Albrechtsen who fired Albion ahead on 56 minutes after Robson's men had made much the better start to the second half.
Ronnie Wallwork robbed Paul Scharner and fed the overlapping Albrechtsen who crashed in a shot at the near post under Pollitt.
That finally awoke Wigan from their slumber as they then proceeded to push Albion onto the backfoot, with the woodwork denying them an equaliser in the 64th minute.
Jimmy Bullard's outswinging corner to the far post was headed back across the edge of the six-yard box by Pascal Chimbonda for Lee McCulloch to rise and crash his own header against the crossbar.
Graham Kavanagh's late free-kick was saved by Tomasz Kuszczak as Wigan looked for the equaliser and the Pole made a terrific late stop from Jason Roberts from point-blank range to ensure the points went back to the midlands.
