Gateshead & District Sunday League Sunday by Steve Wraith
League leaders Fiddlers loose out on penalties to a spirited Allerdene, Riverside lodge are soundly beaten, whilst elsewhere Thomas Wilson’s Hindmarch goes Kuqi….

With the League titles seemingly sown up in the Gateshead And District Leagues respective Divisions the cup competitions give the remaining teams a chance of silverware.

League leaders Fiddlers traveled to Allerdene and played out entertaining 2-2 draw after extra time with Bothcherby grabbing a brace. Allerdene have suffered heartbreak in penalty shoot outs but their fortunes changed running out 4-3 winners.

Last seasons Champions Riverside Lodge faced Barley Mow in Birtley and were dispatched 5-1 whilst Blue Star won by the odd goal in seven in extra time against basement club Pelaw who seemed to have turned the corner with goals from Taylor Varty and Carter.

Vigo continued their trend of being involved in high scoring games. They took a first minute lead with Mark Crawford notching at the back post but visitors the Highwayman then took a commanding 3-1 lead. Genial Paul Foster conjured up a piece of magic to reduce the deficit and Vigos key man Michael Mcadam pulled his team level on the stroke of half-time. The second half was a much tighter affair but the visitors edged ahead with fifteen minutes to go. Foster levelled again but Highwayman stormed into the Quarter Finals with Brodie getting the all-important goal.

Dunston Social took on Dunston Excelsior with Excelsior hitting four without reply and Travellers Rest continued there revival with an impressive 3-1 win away to Holmeside.

Felling faced Stormont Main at the flower show fields and both teams cancelled each other out in a tense first half. Stormont had the better chances but found man of the match Felling keeper Dave Liddle in great form. Felling stepped up a gear in the Second half with Chris Lamb delivering some tantilising balls to forwards Chris Heron and James Maccoy and it was Heron who capitalised on the great service with a scrambled effort at the near post to give his side the lead. Stormont threw everything at Felling with Kennedy and Mullholland both going close but Maccoy but the tie out of their reach with a fine finish ten minutes from the end.

Victoria travelled to the Duke Of Cumberland and ran out 4-1 winners. Grant put the Duke ahead from the penalty spot but two perfectly executed free-kicks from Tate and further goals from Hayles and Young saw the Washington outfit cruise into the next round.

In the Second Division Cup League Leaders Wessington knocked out Wardley Legion 5-3 and Halfway House went nap against Gloucester with a 5-0 win.

Greencroft progressed into the next round with a fine 6-3 win over Duke of Albany.

It was second versus third in the Second Division, with Thomas Wilson eventually overcoming the Corporation Club in a seven goal thriller After a scrappy start, The Wilson took the lead when Woody Rumney rounded the keeper and crossed allowing Barry Hindmarch a simple tap in. The home side made it 2-0 when a long goal kick from Derek Hanvey went beyond the Corp Club defence and Hindmarch lobbed the advancing keeper. Just before half time, the Corporation Club pulled one back with a scrappy goal following poor defending.

Within minutes of the restart it was all square, with the striker slipping past a weak challenge and firing in from the edge of the area. The Wilson again took the lead when David Dixon was judged to have been fouled in the box, and Hindmarch completed his third hat trick of the season from the resulting spot kick, and celebrated with a Shefti Kuqi dive.

Again the Corporation Club came back with a neat finish at the back post, but with ten minutes remaining the Wilson secured the points. Rumney worked his magic down the left wing and squared the ball for Dixon to fire home from 12 yards, and closing the gap between the two teams to just one point.

Elsewhere Bay Horse won 4-1 at home to Kibblesworth.
