Harrow Accademicals 1-0 Patana
Harrow Show Their Academical Calibre
Thursday was a glorious night for The Accies and their under-fire manager and they took the field against a youthful Patana side. The random predictor performed Over the Road in advance of the game foretold a 1-0 scoreline and one might have thought this predictor had read the form book. After a series of 1-0 defeats the Accies determined to reverse the trends and set their hearts on fire.
It was the inaugural game at new pitch Vichupra and the pre-match scouting reported a short, squat pitch which appealed to some sense of kinship in former manager Wise. Speaking of short, the Accies bench would certainly have been so had not veteran centre-whatever Steve Beer stepped up to the mark to display the Accies grit of old.
Some swinging tackles in the centre told that this old warhorse had not been put out to pasture yet although he did display some noticeable degree of agitation as the team bus passed the Ram Intra Knackers Yard sign en route to the game.
Carter was flown into the right back slot where he flapped for 80 minutes, generally effective however and miraculously failed to continue his record run of yellow cards, apparently the Patana boys didnt scream enough as they went to ground. Ashley made it without getting thrown off the Patana bus and a strong midfield 3 of Williams, Bell and Lipscombe allowed Wise, Bpo and Monty to blaze a trail up front with a bold 3 man attack.
The first half was a tactical battle with Patana playing some nice football in ineffective areas and the Accies playing in the right areas ineffectively. The 3 man attack proved a stroke of genius, despite producing no goals, and the Accies reverted to a 4-4-2 on 15 minutes. The best chance of the half fell to manager Monty to sprinted onto a loose ball but failed to beat the keeper from a tight angle. Bpo put himself about well for a midget and kept the defence on their toes. Beer and Kaew were introduced on 20 minutes although one might argue that beer and a kaew might have been more effective. Asked to play at the front, big steve had clearly forgotten to take the iron out of his shorts and found the large magnet in the Accies own half difficult to overcome, while Kaew brought his own brand of random predictor to the game.
The second half was largely indistinguishable from the first with the exception of the Accies winning a greater share of the 50/50s. The crucial moment came 20 minutes in when a Williams free kick was floated toward the box, the forward line caused enough havoc and got a flick on for the Sky Captain (and the Accies of Tomorrow) to head over the onrushing keeper for goal number 2 of 2005/6. Yes, read that again, THE ACCIES SCORE! Bring er that minger! The final 20 minutes was a fierce effort to protect the lead with regular substitutions just to keep the Accies legs going. As Patana pressed, Chris and Bpo both had chances to see the game off but were foiled by the recovering Patana defence. Steve Beer looked the fittest man on the pitch with his crunching tackles in the midfield and Warren, JC and co. kept the Patana attack at bay.
The first win of the season was followed by a short celebration at the Ram Intra Hilton when it was noticed that only Got to do my coursework now Bell and Old Man Wise had sloped off home. The die-hard Accies saluted the first 3 points of the campaign and our die-harder fan club, thanks Katiya! The win bonus is a flash new kit for next weeks fixture, Courtesy of Lawton Asia Insurance, and a framed picture of your favourite minger, it really doesnt matter on a Saturday night!
Who would have thought, a 100% record in 2006 and positive goal difference even playing a bird in goal. Up the Accies!
