Mixed success against Claydon for Wasps Monday 30 Jan 2006
Mixed success against Claydon for Wasps
First loss of the season to the Wasps A team and another good win for the Bs made this a mixed Saturday for the team. Weather, cold enough to dispel the threat of global warming, and a "firm" pitch ma

A Team

On the Gainsborough pitch, you get a lazy wind - it blows straight through rather than around you! Combined with sub-arctic temperatures, this made it a challenging game for under 9s. The As started well - they connected with a flowing first move -Joe, moving it swiftly to Ace who hit a long shot that the Claydon keeper held safely. In the first 6 minutes though Claydon won a succession of corners, the first two threatened with arcing passes and a structured attack. Wasps didnt defend against them and the third gave results. An inswinging corner, a Claydon attacker running in from the edge of the area and an unmarked neatly struck header into the back of the goal - good technique, one nil to Claydon. Wasps fought back, Ace breaking from defence, finding Oli whos first time strike was well saved by the impressive Claydon keeper. Rhys got in the action and his shot just went wide. Claydon continued to threaten and a brave save by Sam kept them out. The game went to half time with the Wasps one down. The inspirational team talk was given, the Wasps power surge was taken and bribes were offered to induce an outstanding second half performance.

The majority of play for the second half was with Wasps - a series of attacks that couldnt beat the big Claydon keeper, who had a great game. Ollie flashed a curving free kick just wide. Ethan hit just over the top, and Rhys/ Ace forced another good save. Ben and Joe kept the Claydon lads penned in but as more desperate measures were taken, Claydon started to hit us on the break and a good one on one save from Sam and missed attempts from Claydon kept the score respectable. Ethan was moved to midfield and tackled well, starting to move the ball away - but the engine was missing a beat on this day and despite all our efforts the ball wouldnt go in. The Claydon force field repelled all efforts and the Wasps stormtroopers had to take their first loss. Wasps lads kept their heads up throughout the game and they all worked really hard - opportunity to bounce back against Kesgrave next week.

B Team

The B team were defrosted and sent out on the pitch. Jack was straight into the action with a "just wide" one on one with the goalie. Claydon responded and a long shot snaked through Jims legs but a rapid recovery saved the ball from crossing the line. The early threat galvanised the Wasps team and Alex charged down the right with the recovering Sam Lucock (welcome back Sam!), churning up the ice inside him, a well placed pass and a "just miss" provided promising action from the lads. Kieron was strong in midfield, quick feet and well timed passes threatened the Claydon defence. The break came on 10 minutes; Jack was unleashed by an excellent Charlie "John Terry" tackle and he went on a long run down the left hand side. He beat two players and slammed in a shot from 10 yards away to make it one nil to the Wasps. Wasps continued to threaten with efforts from Sam, Kieron and Alex with Stan and Charlie combining at the back to keep out Claydon. Jim pulled off a fine one handed save to smother a Claydon goalward bound shot. Half time came with a well battled first half behind them; Emma came on and Sam Lucock rested.

Kieron started the second half with a long shot that flashed past the Claydon post and the Wasps attacks continued. Claydon, though, kept at it and broke quickly from defence with a neatly taken goal to make it one all. Alex continued to threaten down the right hand side and whipped in a great pass that Jacks shot just went wide. Emma tackled hard in midfield and Kieron was always dangerous up front. Two Wasps corners flew in but to no avail and then the winning goal came. Jack was fed by another good pass from Alex, well controlled and then shot into the back of the net past the diving Claydon keeper. Two one and another well deserved victory to the Wasps makes this 5 in a row for the flying Wasps B team.
