MICHAEL R. PETERS BEDFORD & DISTRICT SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE MATCHES PLAYED SUNDAY 22ND JANUARY 2006
Bird in hand still top at half way stage
The three League Cup competitions reached the Quarter Final stage this week. The Harrison & Rowley Cup matched runaway leaders of Divison One, Sandy Sunday, with the second placed Premier side Moggerhanger. League status prevailed and the Moggies won it by the odd goal of five to move into the semi-finals, denying Sandy the chance to win two different League cups in as many seasons. Champions Casino brushed past Newtown Rangers, with US Valerio and Anglers Rest from Division One overcoming Premier sides Houghton Conquest and Oakley respectively.
The Brian Craddock Jubilee Cup games resulted in AFC Sandy putting eight past fellow Division Two side Old Hastingsburians. Griffin produced an eyebrow-raiser when they took out Esquires from the Division above. This result is sweet revenge for Griffin who lost to Esquires in last seasons final. Flitwick Dynamos had no trouble getting past Stewartby and Sir William Peel maintained league form when they sent Prems Jewellery away with a six three scoreline.
No real surprises in the D & V Millward Cup with league positions being mirrored in the results, although Wootton Park Rangers recent league form has dipped, but they found just enough to overcome Inter Cople by the odd goal. Justin Hitman Paul, Xenon Paul and Chris Cooke were on target for Wootton. Leaders in Division Four, Supreme, went behind to Ship Inn but the game was turned round in the second half by Supreme with two goals from Daniel Luke and one from Justin Patterson.
Bird in Hand are still top the Premier Division after struggling to beat Westoning Rec. Club in the league. Westoning went one up after 5 minutes, but Matt Gruff Cheveralls equalised. Pete Makelele Cooley powered in a header to put Bird in front but almost immediately Westoning equalised. James Cant pass Pickard popped up to score his first for Bird to win the game. Queensmen have stolen up level on points with Casino after beating Smiths Sports. In a tight game at Jubilee Park, both Queensmen and Smiths produced little in the way of flowing football, but the Smiths keeper was the busier. Queens defence had one or two nervous periods but there was no score at half time. Three minutes after the interval Queens mounted a good attack, the ball being swept upfield where a cross from the right evaded the Smiths defence for Liam Brown to slot the ball into the net at the far post. Smiths tried to get on terms but Queens defence, well marshalled by Cash Cashin, held firm until the end. Wootton Wanderers retained bottom spot after Sharnbrook visited them and hit the net six times to Woottons three.
Partizan got two points nearer Sandy Sunday, who were occupied in the cup. Wilstead Hatters are third in One after a good win at fourth placed Haynes. It took just four minutes for David Benny Benson to open the scoring for the Hatters. Benny then became provider for Paul Woodchip Jones to scuff a shot, but it did enough to enter the goal. Mark One love Kelly made it three with a superb strike, then Benny Benson got his second and Wilsteads fourth goal.
The battle in the basement between Royal Oak Kempston and Black Horse went to the wire. The Oak scored first and it was not until the last minute that Dean Labrecht ghosted in to score and snatch a point for the stallions.
Queensmen Reserves leapt above Flitwick Dynamos to the top of Division Two hammering eight past Kempston Wanderers. Jon Ginger Ninja Willets scored two in the first half with Laurence Used to be good Abbott and Alex Pop pop Pascan making it four by half time. Wanderers managed to score just the one meanwhile. In the second half Jon Willets completed his hat-trick with Danny The Daddy Hollis weighing in with two more. Rene Roberto Carlos McGraths goal made up the eight. Bluebell are finding it hard to get two points from their games. Four goals was not enough to win this week as Beechwood also scored four to share the points. Sandy Sunday Reserves cannot buy their first league point and remain rock bottom.
Royal Oak Potton march on at the top of Three after a straightforward win against Kempston Hammers. Second placed London Road Old Boys were well on their way to victory at Kempston Eagles with a three goal lead early in the second half. Eagles mounted the comeback of the season when Frankie Sepede scored from a tight angle. James Stephenson then ran from the halfway line to lash a shot against a post and into the Old Boys net. With twenty minutes to go player / manager Andy Stephenson was put through to hammer in an unstoppable shot from all of 25 yards. Both teams had other chances but the points were shared. Caldecote YB Reserves are climbing the table almost unnoticed. They are now fifth after beating Salento at Jubilee Park.
The top six in Division Four were on cup duty, the only matter being confirmed is that Flitwick Dynamos Reserves prop up the table with no points, and Kent Arms are one place above them after defeats against AFC Sandy Reserves and Partizans second team respectively.
Bedford Pad will not be happy with dropping a point to lowly Sharnbrook Reserves, but the Pad retain their second place in Division Five. Goldington Athletic made the journey to Shuttleworth College and beat Yorkshire Grey with a goal from Matty Hull, and a fifteen minute hat-trick from substitute Kieron Kiwi Sohun. Athletics keeper, Mark Smith, produced a brilliant save to deny Yorkshire Grey a goal from the penalty spot.
The Sunday League are inviting new clubs to join the league next season. Closing date for applications is the 1st March 2006. Contact the League Secretary - Russ Maddox for details. New clubs with the use of private pitches will have the best chance of a place in the league as Mowsbury Park will not be available for part of the next football season, causing public park pitches to be at a premium with current league teams being accommodated first
