The bottom three Sunday 5 Feb 2006
The bottom three
2 distinct patterns for the bottom three premiership teams yesterday

All three teams lost!

All three matches were 2-nil!

Birmingham 0 Arsenal 2

It's been a bad week for the Gunners but an away fixture against Birmingham was a chance for the London side to put things right.

After 21 minutes Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor put Arsenal in the lead with simple header.

Birmingham kept pushing against Arsenal's defensive line-up, whose average age was 20! But this also left the home side open to the quick break.

For Gunners fans they had to wait til the 69th minute for that to happen as a through ball from Cesc Fabregas allowed the returning Thierry Henry to knock in his 200th Arsenal goal.

A final blow came for Birmingham when Emile Heskey was sent off in the 83rd minute for his second bookable offence.

West Ham 2 Sunderland 0

The score here doesn't do justice to a brave Sunderland who battled for 81 minutes for a draw.

Sunderland suffered a major setback in the 23rd minute when Stephen Wright senselessly pulled the shirt of Matthew Etherington in what was his second booking of the match - red card.

West Ham's £7 million signing from Norwich, Dean Ashton had a mostly quiet game until the 81st minute when he was in the right place right time to score the opener from a rebounded Marlon Harewood shot.

Paul Konchesky added the second just 6 minutes later.

West Ham are on a bit of a high after winning their last 4 matches and their next match is against Birmingham.

Newcastle 2 Portsmouth 0

Both teams needed a win here - Portsmouth to get out of the relegation zone and Newcastle to show that sacking Souness was the start of the turnaround in their fortunes.

After a slow start from both teams, Newcastle got into their stride and pressure mounted on the Pompey defence.

Still, it took 41 minutes for Newcastle to break them down when Charles N'Zogbia slotted a saved shot from Alan Shearer into the back of the Portsmouth net.

Shearer was determined to score in front of his home crowd and break Jackie Milburn's record. On the 64th minute his moment arrived as Shola Ameobi backheeled the ball into the path of the Newcastle captain who placed the ball into the net.

The day belonged to Alan Shearer, and you have to wonder whether Portsmouth's January spending will ever come to fruition.
