Its close on 30 years that the Thrilla In Manila boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, was fought at the Araneta Coliseum in the capital of the Philippines on October 1, 1975. Ali won. Some boxing fans call it the greatest fight ever. Ali compared his third and last fight with Frazier to a near-death experience. Okay so maybe Wasps versus Kesgrave Kestrels is not in the same league but what games! "A team" game was a hotly contested two halves (felt like 12 rounds!) of quality football resulting in a nil-nil draw; "B team" game was equally contested but came away 2 nil down - two quality finishes from the young KK strike force being the difference.
A Team Game
The Wasps came out the corner jabbing; pressurising the Kesgrave midfield from the start. Kieron was moved to central midfield and used his quick feet to both tackle and hit his precision passing moves. The KKs counter-jabbed with equal ferocity and harassed the Wasps defence with a string of early corners. Clearest cut chance of the first half came from a beautiful, sublime flowing passing movement from Kieron through to Oli to Ace who just failed to convert. The bacon and eggs combination of Ben and Ethan were reunited in defence and were equally awesome. Both landed big blocks and great movement out of defence to unleash the midfield. Cam worked hard down the right and popped up in defence numerous times to assist his defence. The second half came with all neutral and the lads were mopped down, cuts attended to ;-) and gumshields replaced.
Second half was an equally desperate game - great football played by both teams but the legs were starting to tire. Shots from Oli were well saved and the KK goalie was forced into a great double save with a shot from Oli and then a shot from Cameron. The flowing passing movements continued but KK continued to attack. Cameron worked back to clear off the line; Sam was stretched with a super driving save and then a brave gather at the feet of the KK lads. In the final 4 minutes we had the opportunity to land the killer punch with a rare moment that the KK guard was down. Oli skipped down the left hand side - beat his defender and found Ace in the middle - Ace sidestepped one and laid off to Kieron. Kieron with tiring legs was one on one with KK keeper who made a fine save to keep out the Wasps attack.
The game finished nil-nil, was played in great spirit by both teams and KK lads are a credit to their coaching staff.
B Team Game
Charlie must have had three weetabix in the morning - he was on sparkling form. Paired with Emma in defence they absorbed the first five minutes of a fast flowing KK B team. KK though had some pacy attackers and the first goal was well taken and slotted into the corner of Jims goal. Jim was very busy in this game and pulled off a succession of fine saves to keep out the other KK attacks. Sam Lucock was back in centre midfield and tackled hard unleashing Harry, Jack or Rhys. Jack and Harry both hit long shots that either flashed just wide or were well saved. Rhys worked hard up front but was well marked and didnt manage to get a clear pass to add to his goal record.
The second half came and Charlie lead by example - the whisper went round the parents, is it a bird, is it a plane - no its Charlie past the half way line! He broke out of defence charged up the pitch, reached the opposition penalty box and was finally stopped. Harry, Rhys and Jack all had attempts on goal but failing to convert. Emma tackled in central midfield and Stan, Jim and Charlie continued to hold them back. The second goal was a bit of a soft one to let in and Kesgrave went two up. Wasps were unable to break down the Kesgrave defence to equalise and the game came to a finish. Great effort and usual committed teamplay from the Bs were unlucky to pull a draw from a good KK Bs team.
