GATESHEAD & DISTRICT LEAGUE ROUND UP
Heron Hits Double Top

By day he is Fellings' very own Alan Shearer. A predator second to none. By night he loves nothing more than a pint or two and a game of darts in his local.

So it was fitting that the Felling hitman hit double top at the weekend with his 40th goal of the season to keep his team amongst the front runners of the Gateshead & District First Division.

Felling travelled to Birtley to take on a Barley Mow team under a new regime and were determined to put right a 5-4 reverse suffered earlier in the season. Anthony Clark returned to Fellings right flank after three months out with a niggling injury and he put Felling 1-0 up with a wonderful chip over the advancing home keeper with 25 seconds gone on the clock.

Barley Mow regrouped and pushed forward looking for a quick response but found the Felling rearguard in fine form. With twenty minutes gone Barley Mow won a corner and Burns hit a thunderous shot passed David Liddle and into the back of the net to level the scores.

Barley began to dominate the centre of the park but couldn't find that final pass. Some great work by Barry John Boyd set Chris Heron free on the counter attack and he blazed a great chance onto the bar. >From the resulting goal kick the ball fell to Boyd again and he fed Heron who this time saw the keeper parry his effort onto the post.

It was third time lucky for Heron as a minute later he charged down a through ball from Clark and the ball hit his leg and trickled into the net for his 40th goal in all competitions.

The second half was a tight scrappy affair and the next goal was always going to be important. A great build up with Askins and Wilcox fed Chris Lamb in on the left and his pinpoint cross found Heron unmarked after great work by Boyd to put the game out of Barleys reach and to claim all three points.

The result of the day was at Pelaw playing fields. Bottom club Pelaw faced Blue Star looking to build on there recent good form. The early exchanges were scrappy but a piece of magic by Stephen Hands who hit an exquisite volley past Collingwood , to open the scoring. Midfield warhorse Brad Thompson never stopped running and was duly rewarded with a goal to double his teams advantage.

A stunned Blue Star did manage to pull a goal back to worry the Pelaw faithful but club stalwart Anth March popped up at the back post to tap in his sides third goal and earn a very rare and valuable three points for Graham Jones and his merry men.

League leaders Fiddlers have struggled to find there form in recent weeks but hit all the right notes against high flyers Stormont Main.

A Craig Botcherby hat-trick was the highlight of the day with goals from Chris Laws and Graeme Nesbitt rounding off the scoring. Duke Of Cumberland stayed close to Felling with a last minute winner in a five goal thriller.

Patton notched in the first half to give the Duke the lead but Excelsior leveled and then took a 2-1 lead. David Walker was the Duke hero with a great strike to restore parity with fifteen minutes to go and then popped up in injury time to steal the points for David Campbells men.
