Dunston Do The Double

Dunston Social became the first team to do the double over First Division leaders Fiddlers Three at the weekend. Having won a tight affair 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season Dunston came out with all guns blazing at Dunston Park.

Fiddlers Three were missing nine key players and were reduced to ten men with Gippa sent off for foulplay and the home team took full advantage. They took the lead in the 20th minute with a scrambled effort from Anth Huddart.Fiddlers rallied and were soon level with a cute finish from Scott Billingham. Dunston hit back almost immediately and Colin Scandle restored the home teams lead with a curling effort round the keeper and into the back of the net. Fiddlers levelled again with Paul Donnely getting onto the scoresheet. The second half saw Dunston press home there advantage and it was left to Steve Jones to collect all the plaudits with a tremendous right volley to seal the victory for Brian Richardsons men.

Stormont Main took a trip to Birtley to face strugglers Vigo and the
home team were reduced to ten men after 30 seconds. Referee Bill Dowens
dismissing the Vigo centre-half for foul and abusive language. There was
worse to follow with another red card for Vigo with twenty minutes gone.
Stormont Main seized the initiative and took a 3-0 half-time lead. Jonny
Reay pulled one back for Vigo early in the first half with a sublime
finish but it was always going to be an up hill struggle and Stormont
finished the day as 6-1 winners.

Third faced fourth at Dunston Park as Felling travelled to face last years champions Riverside Lodge. Felling who were one goal up last week after 25 seconds had a taste of there own medicine as Alan Pegram hammered a shot past the stranded Magowan in the Felling goal with thirty seconds on the clock. Felling did not get time to recover as another threaded ball from Pegram found Carl Pennington unmarked in the six yard area to tap home and double his teams advantage.

It could have been worse as a long ball from Douglas found Pegram again who blazed over from twenty five yards. Felling weathered the storm and on the half hour started to come into the game with Chris Heron going close at the near post. From the resulting corner James Maccoy thought he had scored but Riverside keeper Michael Falcus appeared from nowhere to clear the danger. The second-half was one way traffic with Felling looking for a way back into the game. It came on the hour with substitute Barry John Boyd causing all sorts of trouble in the Riverside rearguard. A loose ball fell to Chris Lamb who cut inside and delivered a sharp cross onto the deadly boot of Chris Heron for goal number 43 for the season. Felling threw everything including the kitchen sink at Riverside but could not get back into the game and the home team owe a huge debt to keeper Michael Falcus for securing all three points and keeping there league title hopes alive.

It was a day to forget for Pelaw after last weeks heart warming win. They took on fellow basement battlers Travellers Rest at home and were left wondering where it had all gone wrong losing 3-0.

Victoria took advantage of Fiddlers defeat at Dunston with a 2-0 win away to Barley Mow and it was another good away day for Dunston Excelsior at Highwayman who recorded a 6-1 win.

There were three fixtures in Division Two. Greencroft won a five goal thriller at Bay Horse 3-2. Gloucester and Duke Of Albany shared the spoils in a wonderfully entertaining 3-3 draw and Halfway House won 4-0 at home to basement boys Kibblesworth.

In the first round of the Bob Curry Cup it was a good day for the First Division sides. Second Division Champions elect Wessington faced Cup holders Duke Of Cumberland at the Northumbria centre and gave a good account of themselves. The Duke started brightly with Patton going inches wide in the early stages. With twenty five minutes played Patton drifted down the left and delivered a perfect cross which found John Grant unmarked at the back post to put his team ahead.

Chris Liddle should have made it two but was thwarted by the Wessington keeper. Just
before half-time Wessington forced a corner and Second Division goal machine Steve Willey rose like a salmon at the near post to level. The second half was finely balanced and so to extra time. With penalties seeming likely the Duke stalwart Mark Brewis waltzed through four challenges before being tripped in the penalty area. The referee had no option but to point to the spot and up stepped Grant to send the keeper the wrong way and his team into the hat for the Second round.

Holmeside made easy work of struggling Durham Ranger knocking four past them without reply. Blue Star cruised past Corporation Club 2-0 whilst Allerdene went nap against promotion challengers Thomas Wilson with a wonderful 5-0 win.

Off the pitch the league held it's first meeting with future referees at the Gateshead Ex-Servicemens' Club last week. The league appealed to all clubs to put forward a member of there club as a prospective referee and had a great response. The future men in black met Mr Ernie Minto who is Durham County F.A.'s Referee Instructor who gave them a brief on what they will have to do to register and train as a referee. Also in attendance were Mr. Tom Maddison the League President and Chairman Joe Howe. The Referee Courses are being sponsored by the Community Foundation and the League itself and will run throughout the year.
