Gateshead & District League Report Sunday 19th February by Steve Wraith
Felling And Fiddlers Serve Up Hot Curry

Fiddlers Three still reeling from their First Division Cup exit earlier in the season were determined to put matters right in the Bob Curry Cup this term. They have appeared in the last two Bob Curry Cup finals and were hoping to progress at the expense of local rivals Felling, who hold the record for being the only Second Division team to compete in the final.

Fiddlers named ex-Gateshead veteran Derek Ord in their starting line up at left back and welcomed back the influential Shaun Bell into midfield. Felling re-called Barry John Boyd up front with James Maccoy reverting to his natural centre-half position.

The opening exchanges were tentative and scrappy as both teams tried to find their feet. With both teams cancelling each other out Felling skipper Dean Askins fouled Donnely 20 yards out. Nesbitt positioned himself over the ball and hit an unstoppable free kick beyond the despairing dive of Liddle to give Fiddlers the lead.

Felling hit back with great footwork from Boyd setting Heron free but Nesbitt closed the move down well. Bell began to pull the strings for Fiddlers in the heart of the midfield and his through ball put Laws clear who made no mistake to double his team’s advantage.

Steve and Rob Wraith were very animated during Felling's half-time team talk and it seemed to have the desired effect. Felling pushed forward and attacked the Fiddlers rearguard at every opportunity.

Two great chances went begging with Boyd putting Heron clear on two occasions after great work by both Wilcox and Askins. With fifteen minutes to go the breakthrough arrived and it was that man Heron with a neat header after a great ball by Brown.

With time ticking away and Fiddlers on the ropes Felling pushed everyone forward and from another wicked cross from Ian Brown, James Maccoy popped up to head his team level and force extra-time. Fiddlers weren't finished yet though and they took the lead a minute into the first period of extra time with Laws again applying the finish.

Felling rallied and were soon level after another wonderful ball by Brown found Chris Lamb (see picture) lurking outside the box. He stopped the ball and calmly lobbed the keeper to make it 3-3. The second period of extra time was a tight affair.

Felling had introduced Anthony Clark for Craig Walton and it was the substitute who made an immediate impact. His deft ball to Chris Lamb set the left winger free, with Heron and Boyd both shouting for the ball he opted to go alone. He drifted into the penalty box and with a little shimmy tucked the ball into the net to send the fans wild and his team into the hat for the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere Duke Of Albany went nap against Wardley Legion 5-0 and are now the only Second Division survivors in the competition. Riverside edged out Highwayman 2-1.

In the First Division Blue Star pulled off the result of the day in there battle to beat the drop. They faced Wrekenton Stormont Main who have cemented there place in the top six over recent weeks.

Blue Star were determined right from the kick off with David Jeffers a thorn in Stormont Mains side. He was ably supported by Peter Mulholland and it was only a matter of time before all of there good build up work paid dividends.

A Mulholland flick put Jeffers through on fifteen minutes and he made no mistake from ten yards out. Two minutes later Jeffers doubled his tally with Mulholland again the provider. Stormont looked stunned as they tried to regroup and Jeffers could have made it three but was thwarted by the keeper.

The second half saw a resurgent Stormont Main but they could not find a way past Collingwood. Blue Star on a rare attack won a free-kick outside the box and Mickey Trott put the game and result beyond doubt with a Beckham like finish.

Trott bagged himself a brace minutes later after great work from a short corner. Stormont pulled two late consolation goals back through Kirtley and Mulholland but it was to little to late and John Matfin and his boys earned a very valuable three points.

Victoria made ground on league leaders Fiddlers with a 5-2 demolition of Dunston Excelsior whilst Allerdene made easy work of basement boys Pelaw running up a 9-0 win. Duke Of Cumberland traveled to Vigo and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

John Grant and Mark Brewis on the score sheet for Dave Campbells men.

In the Second Division Corporation Club defeated struggling Durham Ranger 4-1 , Bay Horse lost out 4-2 at home to promotion hopefuls Thomas Wilson and Halfway House won 6-2 away to Gloucester.
