Gateshead & District Sunday League Sunday 26th February 2006
Brewis At The Double by Steve Wraith
Duke Of Cumberland took on Travellers Rest at Wrekenton and were made to fight all the way for the points. With no score at the interval the game came to life in the Second Half with the introduction of Mark Brewis for the Duke.
With his first touch he broke clear of the tired Travellers defence and lobbed the advancing keeper to make it 1-0. Travellers equalised with twenty minutes to go but that man Brewis was the hero of the day with a stunning volley into the top corner of the net to win the game 2-1. Riverside Lodge continue to mount there assault on the league title with a fine 5-1 win over Highwayman.
Stormont Mains poor run continues after a 5-1 defeat at home to Barley Mow. Blue Star are making a brave fight of it at the wrong end of the table in the second half of the season. After last weekends 4-2 win over high flyers Stormont Main they took on sixth place Felling at Harlow Green.
The fixture had to be reversed due to the unavailability of Fellings pitch. Felling got off to the proverbial flyer with the hit-man Heron bursting the next after a staggering 38 seconds with a thundering left foot strike to put Felling a goal to the good. They should have doubled there advantage minutes later when Heron played Boyd through but the chance went begging. With fifteen minutes gone Heron again broke clear and played in Brown whose square ball got tangled in Boyds feet and again Felling were left cursing there luck.
Skipper Dean Askins was then put clear twice in as many minutes but found himself with to much time on both occasions and squandered his efforts. Blue Star finally rallied and began to come into the game with the effervescent Jeffers leading the line superbly. A Jeffers run led to a foul on the edge of the area. A quickly taken free-kick fell to the feet of Francesco DiPietro.
He composed himself and hit a right foot shot towards goal. Felling keeper David Liddle pulled off a wonderful one handed save but with Fellings defenders sleeping DiPietro got a second bite of the cherry and popped the ball into the net to level the scores at half-time.
Blue Star with there tails up pushed forward relentlessly after the break and Jeffers put the home team 2-1 ahead on the hour with an accomplished finished over the advancing Liddle. Felling never know when to lie down and the introduction of Clark and Butterfield added the spark that they had been missing.
Good build up from Brown Wilcox and Clark put Askins clear and he made it third time lucky with a first time shot which almost burst the onion bag. Both teams had chances to win the game in the dying stages but both managers were happy with a share of the spoils in a very competitive game.
The big match in Division Two saw promotion rivals Halfway House travel to Thomas Wilson. In a scrappy game played in a blustery wind, it was the Halfway who took the lead with a well taken cross shot into Lewandowski's net An injury to Thomas Wilsons Kirk on 35 mins meant Dixon came on and with his first touch equalised, forcing his way though the middle to fire in from close range.
Super sub Dixon then made it 2-1 before half time. Bazz Hindmarch battled down the right wing and his cross gave Dixon the chance to fire home.
In the second half it was again a tight affair and the Wilson received another blow when Tony Hindmarch was forced to go off with a broken nose, Grant McPhee taking his place at the back.
At the other end Bazz Hindmarch thought he had scored but a fine save from Brigham pushed the ball over the bar.
From the resulting corner, Rumney won the header and the ball dropped to Brett Hogan who made no mistake. As the Halfway tried to get back into the game, The Wilson broke forward again, and Hindmarch's header allowed Dixon to hook the ball over the advancing keeper to complete his first hat-trick for the team and seal all three points.
The only other fixture in Division Two saw Gloucester and Greencroft play out a six goal thriller in a highly entertaining 3-3 draw. All three teams representing the League in the North West Durham Cup progressed to the next round.
Fiddlers Three despatching Witton Gilbert 3-0, Victoria hammering John Castle 7-1 and the Allerdene running out 3-0 winners at home to Oxhill Working Mens Club.
