Gateshead & District Sunday League by Steve Wraith
Hero And Villain - Photo Of Duke Of Cumberlands Carl Douglas

With the icy weather conditions playing havoc with the weekends fixtures only a few games survived in the Gateshead & District Sunday League. It was a case of deja-vu as Duke Of Cumberland took on Travellers Rest at Pelaw Playing Fields a week after the Duke had edged a close 2-1 win with Mark Brewis stealing the glory and points with two late goals.

The game got off to a slow start with neither team pushing forward, both content to keep ball in there respective halves. Chris Liddle linked up well with David Walker but the visiting keeper was equal to Walkers effort on goal.

Travellers mustered a rare foray into the Dukes eighteen yard area but a half chance was cleared by Dunn and both teams went into the interval level.

A resurgent Travellers came out in the second half with the bit between there teeth and it was Malcolm James who broke the deadlock with an hour played. A free-kick was given for handball against Hodgson on the half-way line.

The Duke turned there backs on the ball and from the quickly taken free-kick James was bearing down on goal with Dunn and Hodgson in attendance.

He shrugged of there attention and toe-poked the ball past the despairing dive of the Dukes keeper to give
his team the lead. Duke manager Campbell substituted Liddle and replaced him with John Paul Fenwick and repalced Ryan with Carl Douglas. Douglas was keen to impress and his towering header went inches wide as the Duke pushed for an equaliser.

Douglas looking sharp seemed to be on a one man mission to save the day and he hit a wonderful right foot shot which flashed across the goalmouth and wide.

A great ball by Brewis then played in John Paul Fenwick but his shot was smothered and cleared by the valiant Travellers keeper. With there backs to the wall Travellers conceded the equaliser with eight minutes remaining.

A half cleared corner fell to that man Brewis thirty yards out and he hit a wonderful volley over the top of the keeper and into the net to pull his team level. With time ticking away there were chances at either end.

James a constant threat dribbled the ball into the area and a horrific two footed challenge by Brewis saw him go from hero to villain and presented Travellers with a last minute penalty.

Duke have faced 10 penalties this season and saved 9 but Malcom James kept his composure and slotted the ball into the net to win his team all three points. Special mention to League Chairman Joe Howe who refereed this fixture the way the game should be refereed. Vigo faced basement boys Pelaw and in a tense First Half Vigo took the lead through Ross Preston.

The Second Half saw Vigo up the tempo and further goals from player manager Neal Bonney, twinkle toes Carl Pilkington and goal scoring centre-half Steven Small sealed a much needed win for the Birtley outfit.
