Duke Get A Touch Of The Blues By Steve Wraith

The Duke Of Cumberlands dream of back to back cup success in the Bob Curry Cup was shattered at the weekend as they travelled to Blue Star in the Quarter Finals. Blue Star were out of the traps quickly and there was more urgency about there play with Mulholland and Turnbull causing the Duke rearguard all sorts of problems.

The terrible two some combined on the half hour with a one two which played Mulholland in and he made no mistake from eighteen yards out. Blue Star with there tails up doubled there advantage on the stroke of half-time when Turnbull beat the offside trap and lobbed the advancing keeper with ease to the delight of the Blue Star management team.

The Duke were firing on all cylinders in the second half but could not find a way past Thompson and Mercer at the heart of the Blue Star defence. With ten minutes to go Mark Liddle threw the Duke a lifeline with a wonderful finish to set up a grandstand finale to the game. With the Duke pushing forward looking for a goal to set up extra time Mulholland broke down the left for Blue Star and with a mesmeric run and sublime finish dumped the Cup holders out much to the dismay of Kevin Moore and Dave Campbell.

Alleredene faced Barley Mow and in a tense game ran out 2-1 winners. Barley took an early lead but goals from Shaun Devlin and a thirty five yard screamer from Neil Emmerson put the Allerdene into there second semi-final of the season.

Second Division Duke Of Albany put up a brave fight at home to First Division title contenders Riverside Lodge but fell short losing 4-2. Felling travelled to Dunston Park to face Holmeside and were a goal up with two minutes on the clock.

An Ian Brown corner was flicked on by Chris Heron and skipper Dean Askins arrived at the backpost with a neat header past the keeper. Felling should have been two up after a great free-kick by Chris Lamb hit the back of the net but Heron was adjudged to be a fraction offside.

Felling didn't have to wait long for the second. Another corner from Brown found Barry John Boyd unmarked at the backpost to head in with ease. Felling took there foot off the pedal and a mix up in the Felling defence reduced the defecit to 2-1 but Chris Heron pounced on the stroke of half-time to restore his teams two goal advantage. Holmeside came out in the second half with the bit between there teeth and two goals in a minute saw them draw level. Some great goalkeeping by David Liddle kept a rampant Holmeside at bay as Felling struggled to string a passing move together.

With ten minutes remaining a ball from Andy Wilcox found Craig Walton in space. Walton played in Chris Lamb who let the ball bounce once before hitting an unstoppable shot over the keeper and into the net. Felling secured there place in the semi-final draw as James Maccoy played in Alan Lamb whose pinpoint cross found the head of club stalwart David Butterfield who guided a deft header into the bottom corner of the net.

In Division One Victoria continue to crank up the pressure on league leaders Fiddlers Three with an 11-0 demolition of Dunston Social. Stormont Mains bad run continues with a 3-2 home defeat to Dunston Excelsior.

Fiddlers travelled to Birtley to face Vigo with a new management team of Gary Daglish and Dave Poppleton in place. Father and son Craig and Scott Wilson were both given a starting place and Fiddlers also welcomed back there top scorer Poppleton.

Poppleton celebrated his return with a goal from the penalty spot and there were further goals from Laws (2), Billingham, Rolph and Harrison as Fiddlers ran out 6-1 winners. The only fixture to survive in the Second Division saw Durham Ranger beat Greencroft Social 3-1.

The Thomas Wilson and Kibblesworth were all set for their game, but the referee failed to show up, so its now four and six weeks respectively without a game for these two teams.
