Witnesham Wasps U9s lose in cup to St Johns.. U9sA 0-3 U9sB 1-4
The day dawned sunny and warm - Spring has sprung. Three A team players down and a makeshift A and B team took to the pitch in the fine weather. These were always going to be difficult games with some

A Team Game
With the wind behind them St Johns put the Wasps on the ropes in the first 10 minutes - Sam H pulled off 3 great saves in a row to keep the team in it. Cam and Oli both cleared from the goal mouth and Ben hit large tackles to keep them out.

Gradually, the course of the first half started to change - the Wasps worked the ball out of defence and Ollie started to dazzle, jinx and turn on the right hand side to pressurise the St Johns defence. Kieron managed to get the ball under control in midfield and spray the passes over the pitch, Harry started to break away down the left hand side, linking up well with Rhys who toiled hard up front. Despite the pressure and patches of good play we lacked the penetrating edge and didnt threaten the St Johns goal with many direct shots.

St Johns hit us with a double body blow within two minutes. Poor Wasps defending with the team backing off and not putting the tackles in gave St Johns two fairly soft goals. Half time came and the team was swapped round - Harry moving into defence and Ben pushing up front. The second half was an even, tough game - St Johns probably edged it in possession but the Wasps team worked hard all over the pitch. Sam made some more brave saves at the feet of St Johns team and Harry and Cam worked hard to keep out the attacks. The third goal was again a result of backing off from the St Johns team and being second to the ball. St Johns netted the third - Sam got a touch to it but couldn't keep it out.

The game was played in good spirit and the makeshift Wasps team put up a brave fight.

Captain: Ben

B Team Game
SamH filled in the weakened B team and gave a gutsy, hardworking performance in character with the rest of the B team. Wasps Bs started in full flight. Jack is on an impressive run of scoring in all recent games and he rattled the goalie within the first 5 minutes. The Wasps Bs shaded the first half Alex, Sam and Jack linked up in superb flowing movement with Emma gutsy and controlling the midfield. Jim made a series of great saves and Stan & Charlie were solid in defence. The team battled all over the pitch with the midfield tackling hard and winning the ball. The game turned with a good goal from St Johns before the first half and the Bs went into half time one down. The Wasps balloon was slightly deflated with a goal conceded.

The second half was to St Johns - they came out in more attacking style and we backed off them too much and lost some of the domination. We continued to attack - Alex went on a mazy run from defence, Jack rattled the ball on the side of the net and Sam had a long range effort saved. However, St Johns rattled another 3 in - one was an own goal in off our keeper from the corner and the other two were fairly scrappy. Wasps continued to work hard but their belief was waning and it was hard work.

Towards the end of the second half a deserved goal was recovered from in-form Jack. A pass from Emma to Sam, Sam shook off two midfielders and played a through ball to Jack. Jack charged in on goal and burst the net with a thunderbolt of a shot to make it 4-1.

A strong performance from the Bs - an undeserved scoreline for a weakened team and both games played in great spirit. Thanks to Bens MUM for the cakes and St Johns for the orange slices at half time.

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."
