Gateshead & District Sunday League Report by Steve Wraith
Feed The Moat And He Will Score

Allerdene travelled to Felling in the Quarter Finals of the First Division Cup with both teams looking to reach there second semi-final of the season. On a pitch more appropriate for rugby, both teams got off to a slow start as they struggled to come to terms with the conditions.

Allerdene took the lead with nine minutes on the clock after good work by Moat. Felling were at sixes and sevens and a minute later Moat could have doubled his sides advantage as he ghosted in at the back post
unmarked but saw his low shot flash wide.

Moat did not have long to wait for another chance and a poor Felling clearance was punted back into the penalty box and Moat sidefooted the ball past David Liddle and into the net to make it 2-0.

Felling had a chance in the dying seconds of the first half to reduce the defecit but Chris Heron saw his header go inches wide.

Felling failed to respond to there half-time team talk and indeed both teams seemed content to just sit back and wait for the clock to run down. Centre Half James Maccoy was pushed up front by Felling with half an hour to go and it almost paid dividends as his flick on found Heron who outpaced the defence only to see his shot go inches wide once more.

With three minutes remaining Maccoy pulled a goal back just inside the six yard box but it was too little too late and Allerdene progressed into the semis.

Joining them there will be Barley Mow Social club who also edged past Highwayman by the same 2-1 scoreline.

In the First Division Fiddlers Three faced Duke Of Cumberland at Windy Nook. Duke started brightly and did not let the League Leaders settle on the ball.

With fifteen minutes on the clock Liddle played a great ball to Mosely whose run and subsequent cross found Walker in space and he made no mistake to give his team the lead. Duke kept up the pressure and some more fine play between Howson and Brewis put Liddle through who
made no mistake from twenty yards out.

Fiddlers responded on the stroke of half time. A hopefull ball was played towards the Duke goal by Laws.

The ball bounced up hitting stand in keeper Hutchinson in the chest. The loose ball fell to Harrison to make it 2-1. Fiddlers started the second period with there tails up and were soon level through Baldwin.

Duke regained there composure and Liddle and Howson set Brewis free to chip the keeper and put the Duke ahead for the third time in the game.

Fiddlers hit back and a rash challenge by Douglas on Laws resulted in a penalty.

Botcherby stepped up and set Hutchinson the wrong way for 3-3.

With the game on a knife edge and the Duke team running out of gas,Fiddlers took full advantage.

Laws showed his class with two great finishes to win his side all three points and keep them in with a chance of winning the coveted League title.

Special mention must go to referee Peter Stronach who had a fine game.

Elsewhere lowly Holmeside provided the shock of the day hammering title chasers Riverside Lodge 4-0.

Travellers Rest faced Dunston Excelsior and lost out 4-3. Basement boys Pelaw found life tough against high flyers Stormont Main who won 6-0.

Only two fixtures survived the weather in Division Two. Durham Ranger clocked up there second consecutive win this time beating Kibblesworth 2-1 whilst Corporation Club recorded a good 3-1away win at the Duke Of
Albany.
