The Gateshead & District Sunday League
Title Race Hots Up
The biggest race may have been at Aintree at the weekend but the title race in the First Division of The Gateshead & District League is really hotting up. Fiddlers Three who have led the division for so long have a seven point gap on nearest rivals Washington Victoria. The Victoria however have five games in hand on the current leaders and must be favourites. Fiddlers took on Holmeside at there Windy Nook pitch and were prepared for a real battle with the form team of the moment who had won eight out of there last nine games. Holmeside started brightly but had the wind knocked out of there sails when Chris Laws gave the home team the lead. Laws pounced again to double his teams advantage minutes later and it was 3-0 at half-time with Michael Laws getting on the scoresheet. To there credit Holmeside did not lie down and got there rewards just after the interval with a well taken goal. A Craig Botcherby double in the last twenty minutes however sealed the points for Fiddlers to keep them seven points clear. Victoria followed up there midweek wins over Felling 3-1 with Shaun Thompson scoring a wonderful goal for Felling, and Allerdene 4-0, with a 4-0 win over Pelaw. Travellers and Vigo look doomed at the bottom of the table with Travellers losing 2-4 at home to Highwayman and Vigo self destructing against Dunston Excelsior losing 7-1. Duke Of Cumberland took on Barley Mow at Birtley and with eight minutes remaining there was no score with both teams seemingly content with a point. A slip by Rumbles in the Duke rearguard let in Moutar who made no mistake to the delight of the home team. The Duke were still reeling and a minute later the Barley were 2-0 up as Stephenson slotted the ball past Hutchinson from ten yards out. Duke rallied and with five minutes remaining reduced the deficit with a fine strike from Dean Patton. As the Duke pushed for the equaliser they left gaps at the back and Barley Mow took full advantage, Burns squaring the ball to Vincent for 3-1 and Vincent returning the favour on ninety minutes for Burns to tap into an empty net leaving Duke manager David Campbell lost for words.
In the Second Division only two games were played. Duke Of Albany and Thomas Wilson shared the spoils in an entertaining 3-3 draw and Kibblesworth and Gloucester drew 1-1. The Bob Curry Cup Final will be played at Washington Football Club on Friday May 12th and it will see Riverside Lodge take on Allerdene. Riverside knocked out plucky Blue Star 4-0 whilst Allerdene won 2-0 against Felling.
