The Gateshead & District Sunday League
Beresford Shines In Felling Defeat

Felling installed goalkeeper David Liddle as there new captain this week and he led his team to victory on Tuesday night against relegated Pelaw.

The visitors took a shock lead after five minutes but Felling regrouped and it didn't take them long to draw level. After great work by Alan Lamb on the right hand side Chris Heron outpaced the Pelaw rearguard and stroked the ball past the stranded goalkeeper. On the stroke of half-time Heron beat the off side trap and toe poked his second of the game into an empty net. The second half saw Felling up the tempo and they played some wonderful one touch football on a very uneven pitch.

Chris Lamb always involved hit an unstoppable shot over the Pelaw keeper to make it 3-1 on the hour and he completed his brace with another wonder goal from just over the halfway line just before the final whistle.

John Beresford made a steady start to his career with Felling Football Club on Thursday night. Felling were facing potential league winners Washington Victoria at the Felling Flower Show Fields where a capacity crowd of 100 turned up and the customary dog.

Gateshead Council had rolled the pitch and cut the grass for the former Newcastle aces debut.

John started on the left side of midfield but with the blustery conditions spoiling the game he was switched to a central midfield position by management team Steve and Rob Wraith and the move saw Felling attack the Victoria goal on numerous occasions.

The Victoria wethered the storm and took the lead through Tate with a sublime finish. Victoria doubled there advantage just before half-time with Ford heading past Douglas in the Felling goal.

Beresford had to leave the field at half-time to hot foot it to Tyne Tees for his weekly appearance on Soccer Night but enjoyed his debut. 'It was great to have a run out tonight. I've been looking forward to it.

Felling have a good set of players and have done well this season. Steve Wraith asked me to play and i was only to happy to oblige. I don't think there pitch does them any favours mind. I will hopefully get a chance to play a couple of more games before the season ends. If selected!' ??

Felling manager Steve Wraith was delighted. 'It was really good of John to give up some of his time to play for Felling tonight. He covered every blade of grass and could still do a job for a league team. He did complain about the wind prior to the game mind...saying it might spoil his hair for his television appearance. Joking aside it was a great gesture and it gave the youngsters in Felling something to talk about as many of them do not get the chance to see real players due to the prices at the grounds these days. He signed every autograph asked of him and it was nice to see 100 or so people turn up to watch us. ' Felling lost 3-0 with Bryson scoring the visitors third, but with games in hand look set to clinch a top six finish.

Victoria took another step towards the First Division League Title with a 9-1 demolition of Birtley Vigo who look unlikely to beat the dreaded drop. Tate scored four taking him onto 55 goals this season and was ably supported by Ford and Bryson who bagged a brace a piece.Watson rounded off the scoring with a wonderful solo effort.

Duke Of Cumberland faced Riverside Lodge at Pelaw and ran out 3-1 winners whilst Allerdene ended Holmesides recent good run with a 3-2 win. The only Second Division fixture played saw Duke Of Albany record a fine 4-0 win over Bay Horse.
