Pompey scrap a win with a late penalty

At Fratton Park it took 70 minutes for a goal to come, as both teams failed to capitalise on their chances, and then it came from an already relegated Sunderland.


Missed shots from Benjani Mwaruwari and Svetoslav Todorov left Pompey desperate and as they pushed more players forward this left them open at the back.


And this allowed Sunderland to take their chance as Tommy Miller tapped in a cross from Arca.


Harry Redknapp said after the match: "When we went 1-0 down when they hit us on the break I could see all our hard work over the last few weeks slipping away."


But just three minutes later Todorov hit the back of the net with a 15 yard shot to equalise the score.


Then, just two minutes from the end of the match, a handball from Sunderland's Kyle gave Pompey a penalty and Matthew Taylor stepped up to score the winner.


Pompey are now two points ahead of Birmingham and out of the relegation zone but Redknapp knows the importance of the last two games: "Matters are now in our own hands and if we win our last two games we will stay up."
