Gateshead & District Sunday League 23/04/06 Monday 24 Apr 2006
Gateshead & District Sunday League 23/04/06
Wessington Crowned Champions

Felling and Duke Of Cumberland shared the spoils midweek in front of a passionate crowd.

Felling top scorer Chris Heron put his team ahead with a neat flick over the advancing Duke goalkeeper in the twenty fifth minute and were convinced they were 2-0 up minutes later when Andy Wilcox scrambled the ball home, but the referee was unsighted and waved Fellings celebrations aside. Further Felling chances fell to the impressive Scott Garret and Ian Brown but the home team had to settle for a one goal lead at the interval.

Duke came out more determined in the second half with Dean Patton going close on two occasions and Mark Brewis testing the inspired David Liddle in the Felling goal. Referee Bill Downes gave the Duke the chance to get back into the game by awarding a penalty kick for handball but John Grant pulled his weak spot kick wide.

The equaliser duly arrived in the 65th minute when a well delivered corner bounced off the back off David Walkers head and into the net. He knew little about it but accepted the congratulations from his team none the less. Both teams then sat back waiting for the other to make a mistake and a late Garret header almost gave Felling all three points but it was poked over the bar and the clock beat both teams as the points were shared and local pride remained intact until the return game in May.

Felling followed that performance up with a hard fought win away to Dunston Excelsior at the weekend. Both teams started brightly with Felling coming close through the impressive Barry John Boyd. However it was Excelsior who took the lead through Hepple who made no mistake from close range. Excelsior pushed forward and a slip up in the Felling rearguard let in McRobie who chipped the advancing MaGowan in the Felling goal.

The second half saw Felling adopt a 3-4-3 formation and the introduction of there top scorer Heron who has been suffering with a groin strain. The switch paid off dividends as Heron linked up with fellow substitute Brown to force a corner. From the resultant dead ball Barry John Boyd popped up at the back post to give his side a lifeline after great work by Dean Askins. Felling were level ten minutes later and it was Brown who made no mistake from twenty yards out. With the game on a knife edge it was he who dares wins and Barry John Boyd took the gamble after a great ball by Askins again, he composed himself and tucked away the winner with fifteen minutes remaining. Duke also recorded a 3-2 away win against relegated Pelaw.

Elsewhere Holmeside look all but safe now after a convincing 5-0 win against doomed Vigo. Fiddlers Three continue to lead the pack with the Victoria hot on there heels. Fiddlers seeing off the challenge of Allerdene 3-1 and Victoria beating Blue Star 3-1.

The pair will also face each other in the North West Durham Cup Final. Fiddlers edging past Burton Albion 3-1 and Victoria knocking out Allerdene by 3-2 with goals from Bryson, Ford and Oliver after a brace from Kelly had seen Allerdene take a shock 2-0 lead.

Barley Mow pulled themselves away from the relegation battle with a 3-0 win against Dunston Social a 2-1 win over Riverside Lodge and then a 0-0 draw with Travellers Rest who are still involved in the relegation dogfight.

Allerdene got back to winning ways at the weekend when they beat Stormont Main 4-1. Allerdene were 2-0 up at half time with goals coming from john kelly and tony nelson. Stormont Main pulled a goal back with a penalty midway through the second half but never really troubled the home side in what was really a scrappy affair. Docherty came on as a substitute 10 minutes from time and rounded off the scoring with a bullet header and a wonderful solo effort.

In Division Two Greencroft Social and Bay Horse played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Andy Coldwell in fine form for Bay Horse and he was ably supported by Robbie Mains.

Coldwell notching the winner in the dying seconds and Washington based side Wessington were finally crowned champions with a fine 4-0 win over the Gloucester.
