With summer almost upon us the run in has produced some valiant performances in the Gateshead And District League.

With summer almost upon us the run in has produced some valiant performances in the Gateshead And District League.

Relegation threatened Birtley Vigo put up a spirited display against Felling on Tuesday night and managed to snatch a 2-2 draw. Barry John Boyd put Felling ahead in the first half, but a slip up in the Felling rearguard let in the Vigo hitman to level ten minutes into the second period.

Chris Heron restored the home teams lead and could have had a hat-trick but further missed chances allowed Vigo to steal a valuable point.

Felling chasing third spot then took on Stormont Main on thursday night in a bid to leapfrog Duke Of Cumberland into fourth place and they had a great first half with two goals from returning striker Ray Oshin after good work by Clark, Brown, and Heron on both occasions.

Stormont Main rallied in the second half and a Kennedy bicycle kick gave the visitors hope , but Felling held onto there lead and earned a valuable three points to give them there highest league placing of the season.

Felling then faced Dunston Social on Sunday and manager Steve Wraith had to pull on the boots as three games in a week had taken its toll on his team.

They got off to a great start with Dean Askins hitting a powerful shot past the stranded Social keeper to give his team the lead after good work by Ball. On the half hour Felling were two goals to the good and there top scorer Chris Heron hit his 50th goal of the season after a great through ball by James Maccoy.

In the second half Felling cranked up the pressure and Heron chipped the keeper after good work by Askins to make it 3-0. The game was finally put out of Dunston's reach, when Heron got to the byline and put in a pin point cross which found Wraith ghosting in at the back post to make no mistake.

Felling wrapped up the points when Brown won the ball from a corner and laid it off to Hills who delivered another great ball into the box. Wraith brought the ball down and Askins was on hand to hammer the ball past the keeper and send Felling's management team wild.

Duke Of Cumberland faced Stormont Main at Pelaw and were never at the races. They never really recovered from a Chris Liddle penalty miss early on and Stormont Main played some scintillating football as they surged into a 3-0 lead.

Dunn came on as a substitute for Duke and managed to reduce the defecit but it was to little to late for David Campbell's men as Jackie Johnsons boys took the plaudits.

Victoria finally took top spot in the First Division this week. They faced Riverside Lodge on tuesday night. Riverside could only field nine players so opted to play all nine men behind the ball and their formation almost paid dividends.

With ten minutes remaining Ford forced an error in the Lodge defence and a defender put past his own keeper to give the Washington outfit the lead. With seconds remaining McCartney didn't need any help to tuck his chance away to seal the points.

Thursday saw Travellers Rest visit the Northumbria Centre and the strugglers gave a great account of themselves and showed that they have the fight required for the relegation battle.

With fifteen minutes remaining Travellers conceded a penalty and it was that man Ford who cooly escorted the ball into the back of the net to give his team a vital win that saw them leapfrog Fiddlers Three at the top of the table.

The Victoria now have a two point gap and two games in hand on there nearest rivals. Blue Star continue to scrap for points at the bottom as they cling to there First Division life by there finger tips.

They came unstuck against Riverside Lodge on sunday losing out by the narrowest of scorelines 2-1. Dunston Excelsior warmed up for there Bob Curry Cup Semi-Final with a 2-0 win over Barley Mow but fell at the final hurdle at the weekend as they took on Allerdene at Dunston Park.

Excelsior started off brightly but once Allerdene got there noses in front they were always second best and Willie Moat lead his team to the final with a comprehensive 4-1 win. They will face either Victoria or Barley Mow Club in the Final at Washington Football Club in May.

In the Second Division The Thomas Wilson kept up their push for promotion with a hard fought win against lowly Kibblesworth. In a game the Wilson dominated, chances were few and far between and it took half an hour before Brett Hogan broke down the left and crossed to Lee Rumney who had an easy tap in.

Tony Hindmarch came close with a header and Dave Dixon should have done better with a chance, before Kibblesworth equalised despite calls for offside from the home team.

Barry Hindmarch, playing his last game before retirement led the line well, but again the Wilson couldn't turn their territorial advantage into goals. Once again though it was the Hogan - Rumney combination that made the break through, Rumney volleying in at the back post from a deep Hogan cross.

Despite the pressure there were no more goals, although Hindmarch came close with a free kick in the dying minutes. It's now all down to the last game with Corporation Club and Thomas Wilson tied on points in second place.
