The Gateshead and District Sunday League
Victoria At The Double

Fourth place Felling took the game to third place Riverside Lodge on Tuesday in what was Felling Football Clubs last game at the Felling Flower Show Fields after a ten year spell.

The club are relocating to Leam Lane next season and will be known as Felling Leam Rangers. Lodge took the lead against the run of play after great work by Alan Pegram and held onto there slender lead to the interval.

Felling threw everything at the Lodge but found Chris Douglas in fine form. With Felling pushing forward Pegram again exposed the home team at the back and Paul Wilson doubled the visitors advantage.

With seconds ticking away Chris Heron rose like a salmon at the back post to give his team a chance of salvaging a point but it was to little to late as Riverside ran out victors.

Felling clinched fourth spot and local bragging rights in sensational style with a 4-0 demolition away to rivals Duke Of Cumberland. Felling started well and the Duke defence was under pressure from the first minute with Chris Heron going close.

Fellow striker Ray Oshin then tested the Duke keeper from distance and his effort struck the bar. Felling finally took the lead on the half hour and it was Heron who chipped his effort into the back of the net.

The second half saw Duke win a succesion of corners but with Felling keeper David Liddle in sensational form the pressure came to nothing. Felling pushed forward again and a great ball by Andy Wilcox played in Oshin again and this time he made no mistake.

Dean Askins made it 3-0 with a wonderful strike from thirty five yards out and Heron put the icing on the cake with another simple goal after a mazy run and through ball from the efforvescent Ian Brown.

Victoria took another step towards the league title with a 2-0 win over the ever improving Allerdene whilst Blue Star were left staring relegation in the face after consecutive defeats against Dunston Social 4-2 and Dunston Excelsior 2-0 respectively.

Relegated Pelaw lost out to Barley Mow in a 4-2 thriler and Vigo and Dunston shared 10 goals and the points with Vigo marksmen Ross Preston scoring all five for the Birtley outfit.

Duke Of Cumberland hoping to hold onto fifth place let more precious points slip, this time away to Holmeside as both teams played out an entertaining 4-4 draw.

The following week saw all of the outstanding matters settled. Riverside Lodge defeated Allerdene 3-2 with a goal in the dying seconds of the game to lift the Bob Curry Cup for the third time in there history.

Allerdene’s poor luck continued as they faced Victoria in the First Division Cup Final. A tight first half saw the teams go in level at half-time. Tague put the Allerdene in front with a fine finish on the hour but the Victoria were level within five minutes with that man Ford tucking away a penalty.

There were chances at either end but it was Victoria who looked the stronger team and Ord edged his side in front with twenty minutes remaining. Allerdene desperately pushed forward looking for a lifeline but Watson won the cup for Victoria with a sublime goal ten minutes from the end.

With the League Cup in the bag Victoria faced two games in three days in there bid to win the League title. Barley Mow put up a stern resistance on Tuesday but two Mcartney goals secured all three points in a 2-1 win.

On Thursday the title chasers travelled to Highwayman and there was no robbery as Victoria well and truly stood and delivered the League Title to there fans. Mcartney once again on the score sheet and ably supported by Watson (2) and Bryson.

The Victoria have well and truly deserved there title. Scoring over 100 goals and conceding a paltry 24 tells only half of the story. An unbeaten run of 19 games in the run in is something only Manchester United can dream of. They have a chance of completing a treble next Friday when they face rivals Fiddlers Three in the North West Durham Cup.
