England 1 Paraguay 0 Sunday 11 Jun 2006
England 1 Paraguay 0
England win their first match through an own goal!

In the sweltering heat in Germany, England opened their
World Cup campaign with a laboured win over Paraguay.

Once again Sven showed his conservative side, as once the goal was scored England virtually shut up shop.

In the opening 20 mins England showed signs that they would come out fighting and give the other teams something to be scared about.

But by the second half we were sitting watching the match and wondering 'where is the midfield?' Once Michael Owen had been replaced by Stewart Downing, there seemed to be only one player in the midfield and that was Peter Crouch! With David Beckham clearing balls off the goal line the game settled into a typical Sven England display.

It took just four minutes for England to take the lead. A David Beckham free kick from the left side saw the unfortunate Paraguay captain Carlos Gamarra head the ball into his own net.

Is it worth describing the next 86 minutes? Probably not, but here goes anyway!

Just two minutes later Paraguay's luck worsened when their keeper Justo Villar injured his ankle and came off.

In the second half Michael Owen and Joe Cole were substituted for Stewart Downing and Owen Hargreaves as England struggled on, subdued from the bench by the outgoing England coach.

The only excitement came from a Beckham cross that Joe Cole just failed to connect to.

Still a win is a win and my son went home happy. It wasn't pretty football but England are now top of their group. Hopefully the match on Thursday will be more like the match against Jamaica!
