League Round Up 20 Aug 2006
Felling Curse Their Luck - by Steve Wraith
Felling Leam Rangers faced rivals Fiddlers Three in the seasons opener and it was a tight affair with both goalkeepers earning a lot of the early plaudits. Fiddlers operating with a 3-5-2 formation found it hard to break a stubborn Felling down and were restricted to long range efforts for the first half. Felling sprayed the ball left and right but got little change down either flanks as the opening period finished goalless. The second half saw mutch of the same with Laws and Poppleton going close for Fiddlers and Askins and Oshin almost breaking the deadlock for the home team. With time ticking away and a draw seeming to be the likely outcome, up popped Poppleton unmarked at the back post from a corner kick to steal all three points and leave Felling cursing there luck. Allerdene opened there account with a comprehensive 4-1 win against newly promoted Corporation Club, whilst last years Champions cruised to a 6-2 win over Blue Star. In the Birtley derby Barley Mow came out on top by two goals to one. Elsewhere Stormont Main got off to a flyer defeating Holmeside Hall 4-2 whilst Dunston Social despateced last years Second Division champions Wessington 4-0.
In the Second Division two of the teams expected to be challenging for honours come the end of the season met at Moss Heaps on the opening day.Travellers Rest relegated from Division One last season started brightly against The Thomas Wilson, who missed promotion on goal difference last term, but clear chances were few and far between. Towards the end of the first half The Wilson forced a succession of corners but were unable to make any count.
As the game seemed to be heading towards a goal-less draw, it kicked into life in the last quarter of an hour. Wilson substitute Mark Petrie headed a free kick across goal and Grant McPhee was there to nudge the ball home from close in. The Travellers responded in style, firstly equalising from a long through ball, despite a suspicion of hand ball, then took the lead when Orrick in centre defence slipped and allowed a break away which was neatly finished. As the clock ticked down, orrick pushed up and his flick was met by Woody Rumney who calmly slotted home from ten yards to earn his team a share of the spoils. Elsewhere Pelaw ran out 7-1 winners over Leam Lane Club whilst Duke Of Albany ran rings around Steps winning 9-1. Gloucester earned a fine 4-0 away win at Pelton Fell whilst Greencroft ran out 4-1 winners at Kibblesworth. Halfway House defeated Shakespeare 3-1 on there travels and there was also a good away day for Tyne View Club beating Wardley Legion 5-0.New boys Grange Villa got off to a great start with a 6-0 win over Bay Horse.
