England v Andorra
England thrash Andorra in 5-0 goalfest.

John Terry has praised his team-mates after marking his first competitive match as England captain with a 5-0 thrashing of Andorra.

Whilst England's opposition in their opening European Championship qualifier were far from first rate, it was very much a case of beating what is put in front of you according to Terry.

The Chelsea stopper believes England were in a no-win situation on Saturday given the obvious difference in class between the two sides and the widespread prediction that an avalanche of goals would be forthcoming.

England had to settle for five at Old Trafford, with a Steven Gerrard thunderbolt added to by braces from encouraging strike duo Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe.

Terry is confident that the manner of the victory will stand England in good stead for Wednesday's game against Macedonia, a clash that is sure to pose more difficult questions for Steve McClaren's side.

"We were on a hiding to nothing," said Terry.

"Everyone expected us to win and we knew, if we did things right, we would come away with the right result, a few goals and a clean sheet, which we did.

"Andorra made it really difficult for us because they got everyone behind the ball, committed a lot of fouls and tried to time-waste.

"But we have come out of the game with five goals, three points and no injuries. We would certainly have taken that before the game."

A midweek trip to Eastern Europe is likely to offer a sterner test than a poor Andorra side and Terry admits he is ready for what is sure to be a red hot reception in Macedonia.

"Wednesday's game will be a very different to this one," he added.

"Macedonia is a hostile place to go and their fans will be up for it. We have to go there, concentrate on our own game and make a good start.

"It is an away game and it is time for myself and the other lads in the team to show some resilience. I am sure we will do that."
