Gateshead & District Sunday League
A round up of the week
Dunston Social and Dunston Excelsior have both had great starts to the season this time around writes Steve Wraith.Excelsior thumped a shell shocked Felling Leam Rangers 5-2 midweek with Ray Oshin grabbing a brace for the visitors, whilst Dunston Social ran out 3-0 winners over Barley Mow with Hay, Pennington and Mckenna all finding the net. Fiddlers are level with the two Dunston outfits in the latest league tables after a narrow 1-0 win over Vigo. Blue Star finally got there first point of the season with an entertaining 2-2 draw with Holmeside Hall and Wessington pulled off the shock off the week with a 2-1 win over neighbours Victoria. Allerdene finally brought Stormont Main's good start to the season to an end with a 2-0 win.
In the Second Division Pelaw went nap against Wardley Legion winning 5-0 and Travellers Rest good form continued with a 6-1 win away to Pelton Fell. Grange Villa defeated Shakespeare 4-1 and Bird Inn continue there goal scoring exploits with a 7-0 demolition of Kibblesworth. Leam Lane and Tyne VIew played out an entertaing 3-3 draw with Leam Lane missing a last minute penalty. Bay Horse and Last Orders shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw. Richy Willoughby and Mark Brewis notching for Bay Horse with John Grant man of the match. Greencroft and Steps produced a five goal thriller with Greencroft taking all three points.
Thomas Wilson finally hit form this season, with a convincing 5-0 win against The Gloucester. Within 4 minutes the home side were ahead as Burns' cross was adjudged to have been handled in the box, and Woody Rumney dispatched the penalty. Within minutes Rumney had doubled the lead with a quick finish from 10 yards. Ex- Wilson defender Innes made his first return to the club, but he could not stop the waves of Wilson attacks, and Brett Hogan made it 3-0 with a left-footed strike from a narrow angle. In the second half it was much the same, with Rumney completing his hat-trick with a powerful run and cross shot. Man of the Match Bowman was replaced by upcoming starlet Danny Zadeh, and Kirk and Petrie replaced Coates and Hogan before Scott's corner was met by Dave Dixon and his header deflected into the net to complete the scoring.
At the Weekend County Cup action took priority and Felling Leam Rangers faced Sunderland Farringdon Social Club. There was not much between the two teams in the first half, but the introduction of Ian Brown in a central midfield role changed the game in Fellngs favour. His link up play with Dean Askins was exceptional and a great through ball by Askins set Ray Oshin clear to hit a wonderful right foot shot past the keeper and into the net. Felling pressed home there advantage and should have been three up when Walton and Boyd both went clear only to be folied by more brave goalkeeping by Barry Philliskirk. Boyd was not going to be denied and after good work by Alan Lamb he raced clear of a static rearguard and despatched a cool finish into the bottom left hand corner to send his team into the next round. Vigo were involved in a humdinger of a cup tie with Tudhoe United. With the scores level at 2-2 at the end of normal time , a period of extra time was required. Ross Preston completed a hat-trick for the Birtley outfit to edge his team in front but Tudhoe levelled late on to send the game to penalties. With every outfield player scoring there penalty it was left to the keepers to take a spot kick and Vigo's Johnathan Reynolds was the hero of the hour with a spot kick that Alan Shearer would have been proud of to make it 11-10 and send his team through. Bird Inn were taken into extra time by Peterlee & District Sunday League Premier Division side Horden Comrades FC. With the scores level 3-3 after 90 minutes the Bird Inn stepped up a gear in the extra period and goals from Peter Bryson, Chris Brown 2, Stu Ferguson, Anth Jones and Jamie Sheriff put them into the hat for the second preliminary round. Elsewhere Barley Mow and Stormont Main both fell at the first hurdle losing 4-2 respectively but Bay Horse progressed with a 4-2 win over Eaglescliff Hotel with Ben, Brewis, Grant and Thompson all getting on the scoresheet.
In the Second Division's weekend fixtures The Thomas Wilson continued their unbeaten league run with a victory at new boys The Shakespeare. The Wilson had the better possession early on but it was midway through the first half when the opening goal arrived. Patrick Burns pounced on a Shakespeare players mistake and cooly slotted the ball past the keeper. It was 2-0 before half time following Dave Dixons through ball to Brett Hogan, the Wilson striker calmly side-footing the ball past the keeper with his left foot. In the second half, The Shakespeare's centre midfielder increased his influence on the game, but the away side moved further ahead when Dixon netted at the back post from Burns' cross. Grant McPhee's free kick was then nodded home by Hogan for his second of the game, and McPhee's central defensive partner, Tony Hindmarch hit the cross bar with a header but was unable to add to the tally. The Shakespeare refused to give up though, and a long range free kick was curled into the net for a late consolation, leaving the final score Shakespeare 1 -4 Thomas Wilson.
Elsewhere Grange Villa who have started well this season fell to an improved Gloucester 4-1. Marc Ward getting the consolation goal.Travellers Rest defeated Steps 2-1, whilst honours were even between Pelton Fell and Leam Lane who drew 2-2. Last Orders won 6-3 in a nine goal thriller away to Kibblesworth.
The only First Division fixtures at the weekend saw Victoria despatch Corporation Club 9-2 and Excelsior extend there unbeaten run with a 2-2 draw at home to Holmeside Hall.
