Happy Heron Back In The Groove

Felling were involved in a tight affair with Birtley Vigo at the weekend but ran out winners in a five goal thriller writes Steve Wraith. Felling took the lead in the tenth minute through a hotly disputed penalty. Chris Heron took the spot kick and made no mistake. Felling doubled there advantage in the twentieth minute with some great link up play resulting in Chris Lamb putting Barry John Boyd clear and he curled the ball into the bottom right hand corner beyond the dive of the despairing keeper. Vigo were not going to lie down and Ross Preston was a constant thorn in the Felling rearguards side. He harried and battled at every opportunity and his hard work helped pull a goal back for the visitors, Michael Small with the neat finish. With Vigo pushing for an equaliser Felling hit back on the counter and a wonderful ball by Boyd found Chris Heron unmarked on the edge of the area to rattle home a thunderous left foot shot. The second half saw both teams roll up there sleeves and battle for the points with Michael McAdam a leading light for the visitors and Vigo pulled another goal back on the hour through Shaun McAvoy but Felling held onto there lead to gain another valuable three points to take them up to seventh in the table. Elsewhere in the First Division Dunston Excelsior remain top with a tough 2-1 home win over Blue Star. Hot on there heels are neighbours Dunston Social who ran out 5-3 winners against Highwayman. Allerdene and Fiddlers Three are still unbeaten and early contenders for the League title. Allerdene defeated Wessington 3-1 whilst Fiddlers hit Victoria for four without reply. Stormont Main sit comfortably in mid table with a comprehensive 3-1 win over basement boys Corporation Club. Holmeside are becoming draw specialists this season, this time holding Barley Mow Social Club 1-1.

In the Second Division Bird Inn defeated Last Orders 4-3. Bird Inn went 2-0 up when Anth Jones chipped the goal keeper after Paul Hardy put him through, then Stu McGuire headed in a rebounded shot after great work by the hard working Jones. Last Orders then pulled one back to make it 2-1 at the break. In the second half Bird Inn got the ball down and played some excellent football and Colin Cowen rounded the goalkeeper after being put through by that man Jones again to go 3-1 up. Last Orders then came back with 2 goals the second of which was a thunderbolt free kick to level the scores at 3-3 setting up a nervous finish. With time ticking away there was a goal mouth scramble in the Last Orders penalty area and the goalkeeper fumbled leaving Chris Brown to hit a shot from 25 yards to seal the win for The Bird. Greencroft continued there good form with an impressive 2-1 win away to Travellers Rest.
