Tranmere Rovers 0 v 0 Nottingham Forest
Forest stay top after a hard fought draw.
Nottingham Forest remain top of the table, taking a hard-fought point from a Tranmere side looking to keep their 100% home record.
Forest had the better of the game for the first half hour but only managed one shot on target. Tranmere came back into the game and had two chances to take the lead when Forest conceded free kicks.
It was an evenly matched second half but neither side created many real goalscoring opportunities until a late charge from Forest could have given them four goals in the dying minutes if it hadn't been for the efforts of goalkeeper Gavin Ward.
Forest were in danger in the opening minutes when Ian Breckin slipped trying to get to the ball. But John Curtis, back in the side following injury, covered for him and put in a good tackle to win the ball.
Tranmere looked dangerous but were off target with a flick on by Calvin Zola on the edge of the penalty area to Chris Shuker who fired over the crossbar.
Forest played some good football as the half progressed, keeping the ball on the ground and stringing a number of good passes together.
An excellent tackle by Sammy Clingan won the ball to give Forest a chance. Neil Harris sent a curler towards the top corner of the net but Gavin Ward did well to dive to his left to put the ball out for a corner.
And from that corner Forest should have scored when Bennett's ball dropped to Wes Morgan who completely mis-kicked and sent the ball wide.
A free kick to Tranmere gave them a chance to take the lead. Shuker's shot went over the wall for Paul Smith to palm away and Clingan cleared it towards the half way line.
And Smith was soon in action again from another free kick. Kevin Ellison smashed the ball through the wall and the Forest keeper was able to tip the ball over the bar.
Former Forest striker Gareth Taylor took advantage of his position when he got in front of Morgan but his header went just wide of the far post.
Neither team managed to break the deadlock and the first half finished goalless.
Tranmere put the Forest goal under pressure early in the second half. Forest missed three chances to clear but were let off when Ellison snatched at the ball and put it over the bar.
On the hour mark Kris Commons and Grant Holt came on in a double substitution, replacing Nicky Southall and Neil Harris.
James Perch saw an opportunity and came close with a shot from 20 yards, which only just cleared the crossbar.
Tranmere mounted their best spell of pressure with a number of chances but Forest defended well to frustrate the home side's efforts.
Forest's substitutions both gave impetus to their attack and with ten minutes to go the game was still anyone's.
Forest finished strongly and Grant Holt looked like he would get them a late winner but Ward got up and tipped his effort over the crossbar for a corner.
Forest could have finished three goals up with a flurry of chances in stoppage time.
First Clingan's shot found Commons who popped up inside the 6-yard box. He volleyed towards goal forcing Ward to kick the ball away for a corner. And from the corner Breckin's header was powerful but hit a defender.
Then Ward had to tip the ball over when Morgan's shot from 30 yards was headed towards goal. And from that corner Breckin's header hit the bar just on the final whistle.
