The Gateshead And District Sunday League
Wilson serve up hot curry

In the Gateshead And District Sunday League the Bob Curry Cup took centre stage, and Second division Thomas Wilson kept their unbeaten start to the season going with a surprise win against First division Barley Mow. It was the Barley who made all the early running, with Paul Foster unlucky to see his shot saved by Stefan Lewandowski in The Wilson goal. On 20 minutes, however, it was The Wilson that took the lead with a long rang pile-driver from Brett Hogan. On the half hour Barley were level, when Lewandowski parried but couldn't stop the rebound being put away. Before half time it was 2-1 to the visitors, with the ball striking the post and again The Barley were first onto the rebound.

In the second half The Wilson rallied with Burns coming close before Dixons long range effort took a deflection which beat the Barley keeper to make it 2-2. The Barley responded again, beating the offside trap to go 3-2 up. Then in the space of two minutes The Wilson regained the lead, first Dixon again scoring from outside the box after Hogan' effort was blocked, then sub David Ryan squared for Hogan to score his second. In the last quarter of an hour The Barley laid siege to The Wilson goal but couldn't find a way past Man-of-the-match Lewandowski and his heroic defenders with the final score being Thomas Wilson 4-3 Barley Mow. Elsewhere Vigo made easy work of Corporation Club who really are struggling to find last seasons form. Ross Preston was in outastanding form once again for Vigo and led from the front with two perfectly taken goals to round off another man of the match performance. He was ably supported by Shaun McAvoy and Jody Ingham in there 4-1 win. Fiddlers Three have achieved the FA Charter standard club award this week and that's an indication of the strides that the Gateshead outfit have made in the last five years. The clubs player manager Colin Nesbitt said , "It shows the strength of not only our club but grass roots football in general".

He went on to say "the plaque we received is proudly displayed in the bar of the fiddlers three public house, Windy Nook. They celebrated there success with a comprehensive 9-0 demolition of Bird Inn. The goalscorers Botcherby (3),Patton (2), Laws (2), and singles for Nesbitt and Handy. Elsewhere Stormont Main won away at Pelton Fell 3-1 and there was another 9-0 win, this time for Allerdene against Shakespeare. Steppes continued there recent good form with a 3-1 win over Grange Villa and Last Orders called time on Pelaws progress to the next round with a 4-0 win. Blue Star hit six past Tyne View who did manage a consolation and Gloucester defeated Wardley Legion at the Welfare ground 7-3. Current First Division high flyers cruised past Bay Horse 6-0.

Felling Leam Rangers faced last years Second Division champions Wessington and were made to fight all the way by the plucky but unlucky Washington outfit. It took Felling half an hour to break the deadlock and it was a Chris Liddle header which put the home team in front. Felling stepped up a gear and soon doubled there advantage with Barry John Boyd keeping his composure and guiding the ball into the bottom corner after sending the keeper the wrong way after great work by Brown Heron and Oshin. Further chances went begging for Felling and Wessington grabbed a lifeline at the end of the first half with a scrambled effort finding its way past Felling keeper Liddle. The second half saw the visitors throw everything at there opponents but they could not find an equaliser and with men committed Felling put the game and tie beyond the visitors reach with Carl Douglas hammering the ball home to the delight of the home crowd.
