Nottingham Forest 2 Charlton 0
Forest pile on the pressure for Charlton
Nottingham Forest progress to the next round of the FA Cup after comprehensively beating a poor Charlton Athletic side.
The two teams could be playing each other next season so this could hardly be called a giantkilling victory but it must give the side some much needed confidence as they go back to fighting for automatic promotion.
Forest played with confidence in the first half and looked the better side as they put two goals past Premiership side Charlton.
And they were superior in the second half but were unable to add to their goal tally while Charlton were unable to raise their game.
Forest looked solid in the opening minutes, playing some good passing football, but much of the play took place in midfield with neither side creating any goalscoring opportunities.
Sixteen minutes into the game Nathan Tyson made a fantastic run down the pitch when Amady Faye gave the ball away. The Forest striker ran nearly the full length of the pitch but waited just a second too long before shooting and was dispossessed just inside the penalty area.
Forest's first real chance came 22 minutes into the game. A beautiful, long ball from Junior Agogo found Tyson wide on the left. He sent a perfect cross into the box where James Perch rose up on the near post and headed just wide.
Forest took the lead in the 28th minute after a terrific run down the right by Perch who sent in a well-timed cross just in time for Agogo to slide in from four yards out to put the ball past Thomas Myhre.
And they nearly got a second after another brilliant run down the left by Tyson. He crossed the ball in towards Southall and it looked like it was going in but it bounced down off the post and as Forest continued to put on the pressure Charlton struggled the get the ball clear.
But Forest were justly rewarded with another goal seconds later from Nicky Southall's free kick. Grant Holt rose up and headed in at the near post while the Charlton defence just stood and watched.
They could have scored a third when Gary Holt nicked the ball from Radostin Kishishev in midfield and sent it out to an on-fire Tyson. He tried the shot from the left but it drifted wide of the far post.
Paul Smith had little to do in the first half, having an easy save to make in the 39th minute from Talal El Karkouri's free kick.
Forest slowed the pace down towards the end of the half and looked by far the better side going in at the break.
Forest continued to play confidently in the second half and when Charlton did get forward they squandered their chances, giving the ball away too easily.
As the half progressed neither side had any shots on target but Forest still looked the better side.
Forest changed their front two, with Agogo going off first, followed later by Grant Holt and both received standing ovations from the home supporters.
Charlton had a rare chance of a goal when Djimi Traore's cross came down for Marcus Bent inside the 6-yard box. The ball ricochet around the box and Smith managed to get hold of it as it was about to go over the line.
Tyson became the third substitute when Lewis McGugan was brought on to make his third substitute appearance for Forest.
Forest came close when Southall spotted Myhre off his line and put a cross in to Scott Dobie but his effort was blocked.
And Dobie made another great break, running into the box but, with defenders either side of him, he should have passed to Southall who, unmarked on the right, was screaming for the ball.
Charlton realised too late that they need to get a couple of goals but, even with Jack Lester giving them a free kick just outside the box on the right, they were unable to find the target.
It looked like Forest were awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Dobie went down in the box but the referee was pointing to the Charlton keeper to indicate a goal kick.
But that was almost the final kick of the game and when the final whistle went the City Ground erupted.
