Grange Villa 4 - 3 Thomas Wilson
A GAME OF FOUR HALFS
In the 2nd Division Cup Quarter Final, Grange Villa hosted Thomas
Wilson in a game dominated by a gale force wind blowing down the
pitch. The Wilson, kicking with the wind in the first half, took the
lead on 15 minutes when Marcel McPhees free kick was headed by Dave
Ryan outside the box and the ball looped over the despairing keeper.
Within a minute Mo Mowbray had to clear the Wilson's lines when an
equaliser looked certain. 10 minutes before half time it was 2-0 when
McPhee's corner hit a Villa head and went in for an own goal.
In a two minute spell mid-way through the second half Villa scored
twice, the first a towering header from a corner and then a near post
flick header from a free kick, but despite chances at both ends the
game finished 2-2 and went into extra time.
Within minutes The Wilson were awarded a penalty for hand ball, but
Rob Boyle's spot kick was turned onto the post and away to safety by
Villa's keeper. In the second period of extra time Dave Ryan was
hauled down when clean through for another penalty, the Villa defender
seeing red for the offence. Brett Hogan took this kick and duly
scored. Minutes later Steve Coates was fouled in the box for the
Wilson's third penalty, with the away fans led by Pat Burns sensing
victory, but Hogan's spot kick was this time saved. With 5 minutes
remaing Villa equalised when Hanvey misjudged a cross in the wind
leaving an easy near post header. It seemed as though penalties would
decide the tie, but in the final minute The Wilson's Neil Bowman
inexplicably dropped a back pass short, and the grateful striker
rounded the keeper to score and send Grange Villa into the semi
finals.
