Wilson Hit Goal Trail, by Steve Wraith
8 Goals for Thomas Wilson FC

Gateshead & District Sunday League

Wilson Hit The Goal Trail

In the second division The Thomas Wilson hit the goal trail against the Shakespeare, but in the end it was a slightly flattering score-line. It took 20 minutes for the deadlock to be broken when Marcel McPhee's through ball was neatly despatched by skipper Steve Coates. The Shakespeare then put the ball in their own net, but luckily a free kick had been given for a push beforehand. On the half hour Bowman and Hogan combined to give Robbie Boyle an easy finish. The game was then won in a ten minute spell in which The Wilson scored four. A corner from Croan bobbled round and in the scramble a Shakespeare defender put the ball in his own net off the underside of the crossbar, but Neil Bowman pleaded that he had the last touch and should be credited a goal. Boyle was then upended in the box and Brett Hogan buried the penalty, before Mark Croan scored twice in the last minute of the first half, with Coates and Hogan picking up assists. In the second period The Wilson took their foot off the gas, but might have scored when sub Harrison saw his header hit the base of the post. The Shakespeare picked up a consolation when a quick free kick caught out the opposition and the young striker easily rounded Hanvey to score. With 15 minutes remaining Hogan scored his second of the game to make it 7-1, and in the dying minutes Boyle's cross into the box saw Irish starlet Steve Gray challenge the keeper and the ball crossed the line for a dubious goal to complete the scoring. Elsewhere Travellers Rest visited Steps hoping to pick up three points but they found themselves a goal down inside the opening minutes. Travellers never really found there rhythmn and Steps were carving out the better chances. With seconds remaining Steps sealed all three points after a mix up in the Travellers rearguard.Grange Villa have done well in there first season and they came out on top against Gloucester at the weekend. With the teams level at half time Grange lifted there game in the second period and Ben Jefferson put them in front with a 12 yard right foot finish.Gloucester levelled minutes later and had a chance to take the lead which went inches wide. With ten minutes remaining Chris Bishop hit the winner for the Villa.Special mention must go to Chris Pearson who was Grange Villas man of the match. Pelaw drew 3-3 with Tyne View and Last Orders hit seven without reply as they entertained lowly Kibbleworth. Wardley Legion won at a canter at Bay Horse 4-1.

The title race is still a two horse race as Fiddlers Three and Dunston Social both won at the weekend. Fiddlers Three were shell shocked as Victoria hit them with two early goals, but the former champions couldn't hold there lead and Fiddlers hit back with a Poppleton penalty and a wonder strike from Billingham. In the second half Fiddlers upped the tempo and a close header from Michael Laws and a left foot toe poke from brother Chris put the game out of Victorias reach. Dean Patton sealed the win in the dying seconds. Dunston Social also found themselves two goals down away to Birtley Vigo. Michael Small and Gareth Cornell had the home team in front with man of the match Shaun McAvoy pulling the strings. A stirring half time team talk by Richardson and Riley got the Social back on track and two goals in a minute from Pennington and Fairclough levelled the score. Ben Cattanach broke Vigo's hearts to win the game for Social in the dying minutes. Dunston Social and Fiddlers face each other next sunday which promises to be a cracker. Wessingtons amazing revival continues with a 4-0 win against high flyers Alleredene. Nick Shotton was inspirational as goals from Willey and Coe had the Washington outfit two goals up at the interval. In the second half further goals from Brown and Brunskill sealed the points.Barley Mow won a seven goal thriller against Holmeside and Corporation Club and Stormont Main shared the spoils in a 4-4 draw. Blue Star picked up there second win in a week with 1-0 win over Dunston Excelsior.
