Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa
Is it time to Chop Souey?

Gareth Barry may have fluffed his spot-kick following Titus Bramble's clumsy challenge on Milan Baros, but it didn’t really make any difference to the Toon faithful, they want Souness out. Lets face it they didn’t want him in the first place, he’s spent 70 million and the side is no better than a year ago.

Alan Shearer put Newcastle ahead from the spot after Liam Ridgewell's handball, which on reflection could have been his chest.

Villa equalised with 15 minutes left through a fantastic McCann's low drive.

Newcastle may have scrapped a lucky point, but with the home fans disgruntled, the pressure on Souness has not eased.

He responded to Wednesday's Carling Cup humiliation against Wigan by relegating Lee Bowyer and Albert Luque to the bench. Like it’s their fault?

Michael Chopra, who has on all accounts looked good for the reserves, got his chance up front. If that’s going to save Souness then good luck, the lad plays like a Donkey.

Villa boss David O'Leary also came into the match under pressure following his side's embarrassing Cup exit to Doncaster and the atmosphere was understandably tense among both sets of fans.

Those nerves quickly spread to the players.

Passes were misplaced, tackles were poorly timed, and it took 27 minutes for either side to create any sort of chance, Shola Ameobi jinking past two defenders but bending his right-foot shot wide.

Five minutes later, Newcastle were ahead as the unfortunate Ridgewell blocked Scott Parker's shot with a combination of his arm and chest. On another day he might have escaped without penalty.

Shearer stepped up to move within two goals of Jackie Milburn's record of 200 goals for the Magpies. He blasted the ball into the net.

Villa came close to equalising moments later when Hendrie (my mate went to school with Henrie and he says he was the thikest bloke he’s ever met, who’s got the BMW?) sent a blistering free-kick inches wide and he thought he should have had a penalty shortly before half-time.

As things began to look bleak for Villa, Barry found Hendrie in space and he pulled the ball back for McCann to drive home. It was a fantastic strike, though I don’t even think McCann’s mum would have expected a shot like that, and calls for McCann to get a second England cap, may be premature.

And the match almost turned completely when Bramble, who so often seems to forget where he is and what he’s doing, bundled over Baros.

If Souness manages to survive this period of intense speculation surrounding his future at St James' ParkI’ll be amazed. He’s won nothing…… may be it’s time for Bruce? Newcastle seem to like taking managers that are on the verge of getting the sack.
