Managerless Pompey are thrashed!

Sir Alex Ferguson flew back from George Best's funeral in Belfast to oversee Man Utd's demolition of Portsmouth, although the score doesn't quite reflect the reality.

True, Man Utd were totally dominent, keeping Pompey in their own half for much of the match, but for the first 80 minutes of the match they were only 1-0 up.

After 20 minutes, and a couple of closs chances from Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy, Scholes headed in his first of the season from a Giggs corner.

Pompey nearly struck back quickly after the restart but Matthew Taylor's shot hit the side netting.

And here's the part where the scoreline doesn't reflect the game - for sure they totally had the upper hand, but United laboured for 35 minutes without capitalising on their strength and ability.

Bringing on Christian Ronaldo for Ryan Giggs gave the Reds an injection of pace, and on 80 minutes Wayne Rooney beat Jamie Ashdown from just inside the area.

Ronaldo then crossed the ball into van Nistlerooy who chipped Ashdown for Untied's third.

Man Utd are second in the table, Portsmouth are third from the bottom and whoever takes over at Fratton Park will have another awkward match against Spurs at White Hart Lane next Monday.
